Hi,
So I am primarily an FC guy; I have never had much interest in FDs. I know they are amazing cars to drive, but have also heard they are high maintenance and expensive to keep.
In any case, I have come across a LHD 93 FD base model that someone needs to move to a new owner quickly. Its not stolen and not a salvage. The owner has left the country for good and wants to quickly sell the car. Its been sitting for about a year. It doesn't start (dead battery) but will start if boosted. There is no hydraulic pressure in the clutch; so it can't be shifted or driven. The chassis is clean and rust free, as it was stored inside. The driver's door is damaged and does not close properly. The brake rotors are rusted. The car has 110,000 miles on it.
It has a ported motor (built by a knowledgeable shop 5 years ago) that has 20,000 miles on it. The primary turbo was rebuilt also.
It comes with the following aftermarket parts, all 5 years old:
- Apexi Power FC (with commander)
- Apexi Twin Intakes
- Greddy FMIC
- Greddy Elbow
- HKS Super Sequential BOV
- HKS Hi-Power Turbo Back
- Gab Adjustable Dampers
- Stainless Hard Brake Lines
- an Autometer boost guage and A/F gauge in a dual pillar pod
- some nice aftermarket 18" rims with good tires.
The car has been offered to me for $5000. I am thinking that even if I have to invest another $3000 to $5000 to get it roadworthy and working properly, I still come out with a great deal on an FD.
On the other hand, if the engine is toast and it would take $10,000 to fix the whole car (I don't think it is, but let's say it is), I don't think its worth fixing.
My question to you is, do you think I would be able to recoup my $5k investment by parting the car out if it cost too much to fix it, given the above information?
Comments welcome.
Thanks.

From what ive seen in the 93 fd market lately is that beat up cars go for around $9000. Cars with no motor or tranny go for about $6000. Motor rebuilds can been done for $2000-$5000 depending on what you want done. Obviously it can cost more than $5000. You can also buy used motors in the for sale section or rebuild it yourself to save money.
Before buying the car I would get a battery and crank it over. There are things you can do to tell if the motor is good with driving it. Do a compression check. Check the turbos for shaft play. Look at how the car was worked on how was it stored. Try and find out by looking at it if the owner ignored doing things the right way or if things look like they were done properly.
Clean title? If not you probably wont make your money back.
Also consider color combination. Since your planning on selling it. Have the right color combitnation is gonna help. Is the interior complete? Do you have the money necessary to fix it right away if there is a problem? Just think it through posting pics would probably help people help you with pricing.

Thanks guys.
I have in the past owned a nicely modified SA and FC T2. I have never paid attention to FDs.
I have been shopping patiently for a "deal" on another FC T2 for the last 3 months. Seen lots of rusty cars, over-priced cars, and bad DIY modifications. Just looking for something where the purchase price + repairs comes out the be something close to the value of the roadworth car.
I would not be looking to sell this FD. Just want to make sure that if fixing it (once I let my usual rotary specialist have a look at it) is not a worthwhile investment because they would be well in excess of the car's value, I have a acheivable plan B to part out. I don't have much of an idea what used FD parts and performance parts are worth. Sounds like this could be a workable deal.

If I didn't already have 2 FD's and an RX-8, I'd buy it. What are you waiting for lol. From what you describe all it needs is to fix the clutch and a new battery? The rusted rotors will clean out after your drive it.

The price went up because when it came time to buy the car, I found myself negotiating with the guy's mom, who was the actual owner. She was humming and hawing over the $5k i had negotiated with the son, so I offered another $500 and we had a deal.
This was was posted on the Canadian Classifieds forum; the asking price was $15k.

What can I say; right place at the right time.
