Won't start, buzzing sound around UIM?

I had a problem earlier today where my car wouldn't start. I had driven it reasonably hard and then stopped off at the mall for about an hour. When I got back to the car, I turned the key and the car stumbled and died. After it died, there was a buzzing sound coming from the engine around the upper intake manifold (almost sounded like a wire shorting). It lasted about 30 seconds and then stopped. I tried the key again and the same thing happened. I tried this about 10 - 15 times and eventually got the car to start by adjusting my foot on the throttle while turning the car over.

Once it started, the car was fine. I drove it home and it seemed to run normally. I was wondering if anyone has any idea what this could be. Also, for reference, I had the injectors, vacuum hoses, and pulsation damper replaced about a month ago.

Thanks,

Jim

Sounds like the Idle Speed Control solenoid. It cycles on and off to bypass air around the throttle plates to maintain a smooth idle. I have heard they get carboned up and that carburator cleaner or similar will fix the problem in some cases.

Resurrect this one cause I'm having this problem right now.

Car turns over, but won't start. After trying to start it, with the key still in the 'on' position, there is the same BUZZING sound Brick describes above.

Any more ideas?

I'm having trouble with my car starting as well and have also heard the same clicking by the UIM.

This is one of the few threads I could find that talked about trouble starting and the Idle Speed Control solenoid.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ntrol+solenoid

It seemed to indicate that the solenoid wasn't causing the car not to start but was clicking because the car didn't start.

The buzzing shouldn't be something to be alarmed about (at least it wasn't on my car). If the car doesn't start, this solenoid just keeps clicking on and off, hence the buzz. But just in case, you could try switching it out with a friends car (one that you know works).
Can anybody verify this to be true? Or should I add the Idle Speed Control solenoid to my list of things to check?

Had this problem at work, it turn out to be a faulty ecu. The injector driver would get stuck causing the injector to stay open. The engine was getting too much fuel. When you first crank the engine, everything sounds normal, but it just wont start. When i heard the buzzing noise, i opened the tb and the noise got louder. The noise was comming from inside the intake manifold.
I pulled out the plugs and front rotor was getting too much fuel. Its more likely to be a stuck injector, but it turned out to be a bad ecu. So i pulled off the manifold and checked all the injectors and wiring. Everything was fine, the ecu was controlling the injectors like normal. Put everything back and the buzzing noise came back, but with the intake manifold off, it would not make the buzzing noise. It had to be the ecu so when it was buzzing, i disconnected the plug on the ecu for the injectors and the noise went away. Put in another ecu and the car started right away.

that is true. I had the same problem last summer. basicly what I found out through my searches last summer was that it can be a few different things. first the engine could be flooded. do a search to diagnose and fix that problem. another thing it could be (which was my problem) was the fuel pump. turn your car to the "on" position, don't start it, and have someone listen right by the acces panel in the trunk for the whirring sound of the fuel pump priming. then the last thing is that you might not be getting spark. check that by taking one of the sparkplugs out and ground it out while someone tries to crank the car.(Kinda dangerous)
