won't go in reverse. help!!

this happened once before when i was at the track. i missed 3rd gear and the car would not go into reverse. i drove it a few miles and then it went into reverse with problems. then yesterday i missed third again and it won't go into reverse again. i drove it all last night and it still won't go into reverse. i took the shifter out, its not the that its something in the tranny. has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it. any help will be much appreciated. thanks!

From what I've read, that usually happens as the synchos go bad (until utimately you can't ever get it back into the problem gear).

It sounds like syncros, but you may want to try changing your tranny fluid. i used to have problems shifting gears when my car was cold. problem went away when i put in redline 75-90 tranny fluid.

i have the same problem and i know my 5th gear synchro is bad. it's probably related to it somehow.

Happened to me as well. Drove around for about 2 months without reverse and eventually arranged for Pettit to rebuild it. Drove all night to get there, drove into a curb that morning, got pissed, slammed it into reverse, WTF? it went in! Still had Cam tear down the tranny and he could find nothing wrong.

I trashed that tranny at the track about a year later but I think it was unrelated.

mine did the same thing. no 5th or reverse! I ended sticking it in third and put lots of pressure on the shifter toward 1st gear, and Voila I now have 5th and reverse with no more problems. I guess i bent the shift fork.

How do you guys drive for months without reverse? Do you just push it out whereever you go?

lol i just jammed mine in while the engine was off and it went in. a couple times after that it was hard, now it goes in smoothly. it happened to me after some drifting in a walmart parking lot on xmas day.

i have to say that the likely-hood of a reverse synchro going bad is pretty slim. the purpose of a synchro is to help match the tranny speed with the engine speed when shifting for smoother downshifting/upshifting. so unless you guys have been shifting into reverse while the car is rolling I would have to say you don't have a synchro problem. not to mention a synchro is not an intermittent problem. aNy other gear and I would bite on the synchro thing, but not reverse.

I don't know what the answer is but I would have to say it has something to do with alignment of the tranny or linkages or something. (pulling this straight outta my ****)
