Won't go past 4,000k just revving it up?

Won't go past 4,000k just revving it up?
After getting my car running, I let it warm up and rev it up a couple times. then I get cocky and decide to see if I can rev it a little more than 2500, and it goes up to 4000 rpms and drops on its own, then once I got it up to 5000 RPMs but it cut back down...
Maybe I should check the TPS??
