Wire came out when I tracked the 7 please help me ID - pics -

I took my RX7 to beaverun motorsports complex this sunday to stretch its legs.

I went off track one turn and think the turbulence pulled this wire out. I have looked it up on the service manual but every picture of it shows where it is coming from but not where it goes to. It is connected to the oil pan but from there I cannot figure out where it goes, the wire isnt that long but Im afraid perhaps that the other end got ripped off at the track.

Also while on track I developed a pretty bad oil leak, I have half the engine taken apart trying to fix it. From what I can tell the o-ring in the oil filler neck just couldnt take the pressure and I ended up losing a quart of oil in like 40 mins of track time.

Anyway here are the pictures of the sensor, it is connected to the oil pan on the drivers side, its about a foot long with 2 different holes. The manual says it is an oil level sensor - but I just cannot figure out where it plugs in to!!

Please help me!!! Any imput is greatly appreciated!! Thank you very much RX7club !!

It's obviously easy to know what one end plugs into...as it's still attached to the oil level sensor on the driverside of the oil pan. The plug has been ripped off at the wire inlet from the driverside wiring harness. Just poke around a bit in that general area, you'll find the orphaned wire.

As No Cones said, you probably have a bare ended wire you need to find. In the second photo from the top, go down to about the same level as where you have the connector located and search to the left (front) of the connector. It should be somewhere in that jumble of wires and loom. It is probably easier to see it from underneath if you have a decent jack and stands to get it up so you can look around under there.

I think that is most likely the oil level sensor wire. Look for the sensor on the driver side of your oil pan and see if the wire plugged into it is broken.

In regards to the oil leak you may not have a leak at all. It is common for the FD to leak a lot of oil out the filler neck on the track under hard sustained right hand turns, especially if you're running sticky R compound tires or slicks. Often a catch can is need to address this. There are a number of threads on this in the race section.

You're going to need a new oil level sensor, and they're not cheap ($150ish i think). Ray at Malloy will offer the best price, 888 533 3400.

I'm not so sure about that... I just took the connector (which broke in the exact same manner on my car) and did a fresh cut/strip on both sides and reconnected it with a shielded crimp connector.

It's hard to see, but to me it looks like the harness side is the side that pulled out, so you would need to find the harness, and then find the wire that broke off. Should be relatively easy to spot.

You can repair that connector pretty easily. The wire fatigues inside the connector and then pulls out.

Pull out the rubber seal. Carefully release the plastic lock with a small screwdriver, and then solder the broken wire to the connecter...Make sure you put the rubber oring on the wire first. Reassemble - good as factory.

I tried to reconnect it like GooRoo said Im not sure how well it will work but we'll see. I found a blue and orange striped wire that was bare hanging out of a loom near the fender, it was the right distance away and I couldnt find anything else in there. So I reconnected the wires like gooroo did.

As per my oil leak, I took apart the filler neck and replaced a crushed and deformed o-ring, which I am hoping was the source of all my problems. In addition to a disconnected hose on the top of the filler (I discovered that on the way home from the track as I put some oil in and the oil just drained right out lol)

I have to reconnect the throttle body today and fire it up and hopefully everything works for the better!!

I also changed my plugs and wires while I was down there, the plugs didnt look too bad but somehow 2 of the wires were reading major resistnace and had gotten corroded... hmmmmm

Thank you everyone for posting and helping, I really appreciate it!!

Hmmm... Looking at the wiring diagram on page C1-a shows that the wire should be 'L' which is blue. Not sure if you had the right wire. It would be easy to test though, you could ground the wire and see if the oil light comes on.

Be careful though, if it's not the oil light then grounding it could have other negative effects.

didn't you notice the oil low dummy light? If not, I'd look into why and fix that too.

Is the oil level switch Normally Closed? I thought it was Normally Open... I know my oil level light doesn't come on if I disconnect the sensor.

That same connector is broke on my car and my low oil light does not come on. So I begin to question is this connector really the oil level sensor..

that might be the case then...I've only seen it once. Day after I bought my car making a hard left hand turn. Previous owner had let it run low I guess???

the float is normally up, when the oil level gets low then the float drops and grounds out to the case of the sender and makes continuity to ground so if the wire is cut or broken then the oil light will never come on.
