Winter VS Synthetic
I have read number of threads which claiming that synthetic oil will not hurt the rotary even brings some advantages. However I think u guys are using synthetic under warm weather condition right?
I am in Edmonton. Here's the lowest temperature can be -30 C in winter. The average is around -15 C. I will get a block heater for my FD.
I just wondering if synthetic will hurt the rotary in this extreme condition?? What grade of oil should I use? And how often should I change the oil??
Plz give me some tips about this topics, thx!
By the way, is there any link or thread about oil change DIY???
Thx~~

I would think synthetic would flow better and provide better protection. Perhaps you should run 5w-30 with those very cold temps. The colder it is the lower the _w number you want so the oil will flow better when cold. I am using 10w-30 Mobil 1 this winter here in Delaware but I've used 5w-30 Mobil 1 other winters with no issues. Moving to 10w-30 Royal Purple in a few weeks. I still change the oil every 1000-2000 miles or so. The $25 per change is cheap insurance and I don't drive it much. I also seem to get a lot of fuel dilution...

AMSOIL makes a 0-30w synthetic that would be good for very cold climates. Check them out at
www.amsoil.com
They also have a variety of great products. I've used them for years in 1st gen 7's and now in 3rd gen 7's.

At -20C, a synthetic will flow much better than same spec conventional oil.
All FDs have oil coolers, which are very effective at -20C. I'd run mobil-1 ZEROW30 if I drove at those temps, esp for cold starts w/o heater. Change often. Increase to 10W30 by summer, normal use.
