windshield replacement (hard to find)
windshield replacement (hard to find)
Anyone replaced a windshield on their fd recently? I've checked in with a couple places and apparently there are barely any windshields left in the US. Is this possible? There are 3 colors, gray, bronze, blue. My 93 black has a gray tinted one from the factory, but apparently there are only blue tinted ones left in the US, and not too many of those floating around. Seems pretty ridiculous. Even the stealerships didn't have leads. Anyone know otherwise?
Try telling them you need a 94 windshield instead. Same windshield... Happened to me the other time. I asked what colors were available they said blue tint only.... kept pressing and asked if they can look at a different year and yup blam no blue for me.

I am not sure where you are in California but I always go to "Cheap price Auto Glass" 18002 S. Vermont Ave, Gardena, CA 90248. I have replaced 2 FD windshields and they have it there within 2 hours. I always call and make an appointment for a few days later so when I get there the glass it already there. They charge a whopping $100 for everything. They are fast and efficient. The windshield industry is a crazy space from what I'm learning. Couple different things in response to the above:
I used Safelite for the initial crack repair (can still see it) and had them check on replacement glass. They don't have any at all in stock. Apparently they source their own glass. Used to be from US, then Mexico and now China. The quality of their China glass is apparently not the best. They checked external glass sources and were only able to come up with the blue tinted glass.
I went to a well reviewed glass shop here in LA and they checked around and came up with the some. The only FD glass available in the US in blue tinted. Not sure on the glass make. They also checked with dealers and their systems are show no glass inventory. I should call Ray at Molloy and see what he says.
The range in replacement costs is all over the place too. Some mentioned a replacement cost of $100-200. Just the oem windshield from Mazda is $89 msrp so you're def not getting that for $100-200 all in.
I was quoted $380 from the shop I mentioned out here. That's with $89 molding and $185 for the blue tinted glass plus labor. Seems about right. Subtract the oem molding and use lesser glass and I guess you can get down to $200. $100 I have no idea how.
OEM glass on my NSX back in the day was $900 just for the glass :0
