Question Will 134a work in r12 system without converting?

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but I could not find anything using "search". The reason I ask is someone used about half a can to charge my system and I don't think they needed a license to purchase it so it must have been 134a. However, the sticker under the hood says "r12". The way I understand it, the r12 valve is threaded on the outside much like a tire valve and this is the one I have. Is it even possible to connect 134a with a r12 valve, and if so what are the consequences of putting 134a in an "unconverted" r12 system.

r134 sucks major ***. Stay away from it. Use freeze 12 (which maybe what they used), or AutoCool.

Search.

all you have to do is change the oil and the fittings to use r134, all new cars use r134 and its not that bad...

^ yes it is that bad. since you will be using a r12 sys to run a 134a sys it will never be as cold again. even if you change the oil and seals. read the below thread and see my solution. it worked out fine and a lot cheaper than a conversion or refil at a ac station.

Convert to R134 valves and fill it up with AUTOCOOL. Works great. Low side pressure will now be about 50 with hi-side lower than before.
