Why would shifter turn?

We noticed when changing shift ***** that the "shifter shaft" will turn completely around. That is with the **** tight, you can turn the entire metal shaft around.

Looked at the fsm drawings and it shows the shifter as one piece, but obviously there is something that can come loose.

We have another shifter, so I can remove/replace -- but still want to understand what went wrong.

Thanks for any help.

Your shifter is trying to tell you to get rid of the frog eye headlights

On a serious note, sounds like the slot in the ball at the end of the shifter is not interfacing with the small peg that protrudes out from the trans--- it points towards the rear of the car.

^ Yep, there is a slot / peg thing down in the transmission housing that should keep it from turning.

Most likely if you pull the center panel off it will all be clear.

My guess is this: The shift lever has 2 parts, joined with a rubber bushing inside the shifter. It's possible for it to break/delaminate, and the shifter will move and turn around at that point. The slot at the shift ball on the bottom that locates in the pin in the transmission is pretty hardy, and even if all the shift lever bushings are totally shot it shouldn't be able to spin.

Yes, it seems that the shifter is turning at that "2 part" spot and the pin is in the correct position. Could be we broke it loose somehow when trying to set a shift **** straight.

Dale said "de-laminate", can it be re-laminated or is it dead now?

Thanks

Just get a replacement shifter. That shift lever should be a dime a dozen used.

Hell, I think I have one. PM me and we can work out a deal.

We have 2 other shifters, just trying to learn what went wrong. Have one that came on a JDM tranny and a short shifter. Probably just try one of them.

Thanks
