Why did you get the RX-7

Like the subject says. Why did you buy the RX-7 over all the other cars in the market?
How's the car as a daily driver?

By the way, I did a search, and nothing came up.

I got an RX-7 because it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made IMO. I've thought so since the day it came out. It's rare, it gets a lot of looks, and it's less expensive than a lot of other comparable cars (at least initially). It's light weight but has a lot of power. It's a "pure sports car" as Mazda used to say.
I don't know how it is as a daily driver because I don't drive mine daily but a lot of people do. I would imagine that the Supra tt would make a better daily driver though. It's not nearly as pretty as the 7 but it's more reliable and I don't think the suspension is tuned so tightly. Driving the RX-7 on Michigan roads can be a jarring experience.

Bought a First Gen by accident.. my bmw 320i took a dump on the way to check out the car.. so I bought it.. It was cool. When it needed to go, I bought a Second Gen.. and the coolant seals went bye bye.. so what else was I going to get? Beaides, the car's simply amazing, looks and performance wise.

And yep, it's my daily driver.. 'cept for the winter.. working on a 2 liter VW baja bug with a gas heater for my winter beater.

It was simplicity and lightweight - the philosophy in designing the FD - that mattered to me the most.

I like the fact that everything in a FD is functional and built for speed. Nothing is for show, even the fender vents. This contrasts sharply to a 3000GT. The interior is simple and straight forward, not loaded with climate control, power seats and bunch of stuff that doesn't belong in a sports car. Its exterior lines are also simple and looks sharp.

I don't like heavy cars. It chews up everything from cooling system to brake to trans to tires... I like light cars w/ plenty of power. This is the formula to all RX7.

You guys say that this car is a pure sports car, I've got nothing against that, but is it really tiny on the inside?

Also I've been in a Supra TT with BPU, and was like: "Oh ****."
Does the RX-7's give you the same push back into your seat? A friend of mine said that they don't feel fast, although when you look at the speedometer, its already up there. Thoughts?

Cool

The interior is only tight if you're taller than 5'10"

I've bought the RX-7 because it was unique. Everything on it is out of the ordinary. It was never based on a "family sedan" platform. Everything was desigend especially for it.
Now almost 8 years later and the car still gets confused for a 2001 model. People can't believe that the car is almost 8 years old. Body design is timeless and the power that you get out of 1.3L is phenominal.

I drive mine daily before I had the suspension upgraded. Now that it has been changed the ride is a bit stiffer but the car just keeps rewarding you with its performance.
If you don't have a second car (slower car) you start to lose the "feel" of the performance. But once you've driven your second car and you hop back in the FD immediately it all comes back to you......

I've been in Supra's and it's just not the same. Sure the car has performance but it's not nearly as nimble as the RX-7. The weight of that thing is just too much.

I'm planning on getting a second car for the winter months but I still haven't decided what I want.....

Many people think that driving an FD as a daily driver isn't good for it or you. But these cars hate to be standing still for a long period of time. They're meant to be driven. And that's what I do....

I JUST bought my R1, only my third day on the road with legal tags, so I thought I'd throw my opinion into the mix on this one.

I just got my degree in June and got a "real" job, so obviously the firs tthing i wanted to do was to buy a car. Being a porr college student is allright, except when yo've been a gearhead your whole life and you want a faster ride then your 88 fiero coupe. So, i started looking for sports cars that were in the 10-15K range. I needed car with character, one that had speed, and one that had potential on the track. I was intitially looking at 944 Turbos, mr2 turbos, etc, but found the FDs i was looking at to be exactly what i was looking for, and was soon hunting solely for these cars. I found my baby, and bought her for 13K. I have been nithing but amazed since i got the car and started ot tinker with it and dig into the mechnaics of it. These cars are bred for speed, and on top of that they are beautiful.

I'm 6'2" and the car fits like a glove, I love it, but a little bigger and i might have problem. The car is my daily driver, but I always have my fiero too as insurance.

Hope this convinces you that these are great cars worth every penny

Thumbs up

I got mine because I loved the '89 model I had wrecked a long time ago and I love having cars that you don't see on the road everywhere.

I hate driving a car that you see 30 of them just on your way to the store. I drive a '96 Sunfire as my everyday car and man that just sucks. No offense to people that have purchased these cars and like them, but it's not my RX-7. I just need to work out a way to have the wife's Audi A4 as my everyday car and give her back the Sunfire. :p

However if I didn't have the job I have now, I would have unloaded this money pit a few years ago.

17k

What other car can you get to do .98 on the skid pad stock out of the box. Only the new Z06 can and it takes $50,000. If there is another car that could do it, it probably costs over a $100,000. Real sport cars do not have back seats. Sorry Supra and 911 owners, but you have to admit that the car would be better without them. Almost every other car with this much power weighs too much. The 300 Z turbo for example weighs almost 700 lbs more than our 3rd gen. That is like having three fat girls in the passenger seat with you. No other car has the combo of .98 on the skid pad, stopping from 60 to 0 in 109 feet and great 0 to 60 times for the price. I have seen published 0-60 on a stock from as low as 4.9 seconds to 5.4 seconds. I am 6 ft tall and fit in the car perfect. If the car were any bigger, it would not be as nimble and would ruin the fun. You can get a cheaper car in the Camaro or Trans Am, but they handle like a wounded rhino.

i bought my 3rd gen because i loved it the moment i first saw one. there's only a handful of cars in the world i think look better, and it's got *****-out performance, to boot. i've had a lot of problems with it, but every time i get back in the driver's seat, it's all worth it. i can't imagine EVER getting rid of this car!!!

Motor Trend said the RX7 R1's suspension was cruel and unusual punishment on anything not smooth pavement...

I hope the base FD3S RX7 (Which I might get) dosen't ride like that. Can anybody describe the ride quality (specify if you've modified the suspension wheel/tire combo)?

I have a touring (same suspension as the base). I hear it's not as punishing as the R1 but it still has the tightest suspension of any car I've ever been in. You can tell how rigid the chasis is when going over bumps. I do my best to stay on new roads but that can be difficult. If you want a smooth ride, the RX-7 isn't the car for you.
The Touring is very quiet inside. The car seems air tight. On the highway it's probably as quiet as my 99 BMW 323i was. Some exhaust upgrades will fix that problem though .

i bought my first rx7 not realy knowing anything about it. i got it from a friend who had done some work to it, headers, intake, pullies and such. it was an 86 se. we were young and stupid, but luckily met one of my now good friends by racing him ad getting our asses handed to us at a random stoplight race. (he is a rotary mechanic)
we stoped to talk to him about his turboII and it was all over for me. since then, i have owned more rx7's than i can even count. at one point i had 6 at one time as spares/ parts.

btw.....i bought the first fd that i ever saw on the street. i ended up being MY first fd. the guy almost hit me comming out of the parking lot of the aramark towers in philly while i was skating. i fell in love with it. then about a year latter i saw one for sale near my house, got thenumber and bought it. turns out the guy worked for aramark at the towers, and he said he rembered almost hitting a kid on a skateboard a year or so ago. LOL. funnier thing.....i now work for aramark.
