why did they discontinue the RX7 in america???

I mean it's such a popular car and everyone still loves it, then why did mazda discontinue it??? aren't they still making it in Japan?? I'd love to buy a new one in the US if they still sold it.

BLAH

2002 is the last year of the RX-7 in Japan. They ended production in August.

They discontinued the RX-7 because of low sales. The last year in America was 1995.

People wanted SUV's, not sports cars during the 1990's. The FD wasn't the only sports car to suffer, Supra, 300zx etc...

look at how sales declined from 93 to 95 model year. very sad. at the same time, if rx7s were a dime a dozen would you like it as much?

and to be honest, it's not that popular of a car. all my friends keep telling me i should have gotten the new z, m coupe, m3, etc. instead of a old, unreliable, impractical car that regular mechanics can't work on. but oh well, what do they know

The real reason they stopped selling the RX-7 here, as reported in Autoweek magazine, was the OBD II standards which went into effect for 1996 cars. It would have cost Mazda 5 million dollars to bring the RX-7 into compliance, and having sold just 500 1995 models, well, you do the math. The base price had been steadily creeping up until it reached $37,500 in '95. The car was already pricing itself out of the market, and tacking on the cost of OBD II would have made the car virtually unsellable. Otherwise, since they were still making them in Japan anyway, without OBD II Mazda might have continued selling the car here as an image model, even if it sold in very low numbers.

Well it was more then a few reasons. OBD II, Sales, Ford, concerns about reliabilty, etc...

JCONN is right. In 95 i saw a Montego Blue model fully loaded with everything and a sticker of $41,500 at a dealership by my house back in the day. At the time i couldnt afford to even by a used FD. The Japanese Yen was also very high compared to the American dollar which helped make the prices creep up as well.

My cousin found an old Sport Compact Car from 1996 and they had the story on the rotary and why they stopped bringing it to the U.S. Mazdas president said was because they had to get a new Vapor canister and it would cost way to much money to redesign part of the car to fit the new canister, because the car had such low sales in the U.S.

OBD-II - On-Board Diagnostic System 2
find out more about it here.
www.obdii.com

Its just a shitty way of making more money if you ask me. I guess it should make things easier, but it makes harder for people who like to mess around with their cars.

1995 was mazda's lowest point...they changed their CEO in 1995

SUVs were getting more popular

smog

too much $$$ spent on warranty word (could have been avoided if the mechanics knew what they were doing)

and the car is too fast when modded (or even stock), the Americans don't like that...same reason why they banned the 787b from Le Mans

Since OBDII was introduced in 1996, would all FD's sold in the US between 93-95 have the OBDI? Also, are do we have a MAF or MAP sensor?

We have a system called speed density instead of a Mass Airflow sensor. Speed Density measures the amount of air coming into the engine based on input from the MAP (manifold air pressure) sensor.
