Why can I hear my tranny wind down when deceling in gear (1st, 2nd)
My car has started to transmit some noise recently while decelerating in the lower gears... I have the ACT 6-puck and SRmotorsports 9.5lb flywheel. I also found that when the shop that I take my car to regularly changed my syncros some time ago they forgot to tighten the tranny oil plug... it was pretty low! does any one have some ideas for me?
Thanks,
Ryker

you shouldn't be using the transmission to slow your car. it sounds cool sometimes, but brake pads are a lot cheaper to replace than a transmission. I know this didn't answer your question, but it is just some advice.

I don't know why people think it's bad on your car to let ENGINE BRAKING slow your car down. If someone can give me a scientific explanation for why this causes harm, please do so. I have downshifted and/or engine braked coming to a stop for over 12 years now and haven't had any tranny problems on any of my cars....

I think it's more of a wear and tear thing, rather than being bad for your tranny.
Which would you rather wear out and put more stress on? Your tranny or your brake pads?

THe sound can be gear back lash, and or bearing wear. Put in fresh good grade oil and see if some noise goes away. what is the best oil ( 90wt ) you ask ? Ask the knowledgeable forum people for that info .

Let's keep on the topic for the sake of the poster
If you had a new ring/pinion put in recently I'd say it might not have the right backlash set. If you haven't made changes to those parts, I'd suspect a worn out bearing in the transmission

I dont think you should downshift into first... Course I can't tell you why I think that. First is extremely difficult to downshift into typically and doing this might cause problems in itself...
And if you were going to have a discussion about wear on engine/transmission due to downshift think about this.
If you were going to buy a used transmission and 2 were available - one with 20K and one with 80K on it for the same price everyone would buy the 20K (including me) so mileage on a transmission or any part for that matter must make a difference. If mileage makes a difference then it would make sense that less miles under torque would be better than more. So shifting to neutral should theoretically extend the life of your transmission.
Now that being said I almost always downshift except to first because I like to...

I'm hoping that it is not the bearing... is the bearing lubed by the transmission oil? I may go to my shop and ask them to look at it because they forgot to make sure that the fill plug was tightened down... hmm...

I'm trying to remember here... I know that some (all?) of the bearings in an FD are 'sealed' bearings, so they don't need much/any(?) tranny juice on them to keep them happy short-term. However, I do think that for long term survival, they would still need the oil there to remove heat from them.
So make sure you have fluid in there for starters. That's probably all you can do for now other than monitor the situation.
