WHY!!!!!! broke a brand new throw out bearing
WHY!!!!!! broke a brand new throw out bearing
So I was putting some final touches on my motor going in.... starter & slave cylinder... I get the slave bolted down with the plunger lined up, go to press in the clutch, hear some evil sounds & the clutch goes to the floor. I go to look in the inspection hole and see the clutch fork is past the throw out bearing. I feel around in the bottom of the bell housing and sure enough, a little piece of throw out bearing. I bought the throw out bearing BRAND NEW, first time I ever put force on it. I do have an ACT HD pressure plate, but I know other people have used these with no problems. So I am thinking something must be wrong, but what? I torqued the pressure plate to flywheel bolts down to spec. Now I have to decide weither its easier to pull the motor back out or to pull the tranny.
If there is any clutch fluid aorund, if so, it could be your slave cylinder. If the slave cylinder piston is not in the dimple of the cluch fork it can slip off. If that happens it is possible to destroy the boot of the slave cylinder when the pedal is depressed.

I had a TO bearing recently fail...I found it easier to pull the motor

It's not that hard to drop the tranny assuming you can get the car 18-24" off the ground on all 4 corners. Also having a small tranny jack also does wonders. I just did got done replacing my clutch fork this way in my garage.
Are you sure the bearing broke? Usually the wedge collar gets bent and pulls through.
Either way it sucks since any of these three parts requires the tranny to be off to change them.

More than likely the clutch fork broke. Its a well known problem with the act HD presure plate. I have personaly seen 6 of them break.
There is a roll pin the is pressed though one of the forks arm's. It's this arm that cracks and breaks. Once it breaks it will alow the arms to **** side ways and pull out of the TO bearing.
Its a pretty common problem, Do a quick search for "clutch fork" and "ACT" and you will see what i mean. The bad part is when it breaks it takes out the TO bearing too.

OK... you guys are gonna laugh.... I think the throw out bearing was put in backwards.
I thought about it a lot today...... when I was getting the motor ready to be installed, my friend put the new throw out bearing in for me. I didn't double check it... my friend knows more about cars then I do... I guess he assumed it was a push type clutch. I talked to him today and he swears he put it in just as the old one came out... but a car couldn't run with it backwards, right? That brings up another question, could I damage anything with the throw out bearing in backwards, i mean besides the throw out bearing?
From what I could see in the inspection hole, it looked like the throw out bearing hooks curled towards the tranny.
Either way, I am getting that motor back out tonight, I'll try and get some pics, or at least let you guys know the verdict.

That sucks man. I dont see how it would break if it was in backwards. There would be no resistance for it because it wouldn't be connected to the pressure plate. Hope you get everything worked out.
