I got my FD in 93.
Expensive purchase.
Expensive/intensive upkeep.
Spartan.
Loud.
Rough.
Smelly.
Impractical.
Would I do it again? God yes.
How many cars "penned" +/-13 years ago (yes.. THAT LONG) still look this striking and actual today?
How many cars under 50,000U$ today can keep up to an FD?
The car has changed my life profoundly. I've made special acquaintances and friendships and turned even more heads than I may have liked because of this car. And realistically, I can only think of a 911 Turbo that could have done that much for me, and that says a lot.

I've been killing myself for the last six+ years in the telicom buisnes. Anywhere from eight to sixteen hours every day. I've pulled my share of 24-36 ers as well. Ask someone in the IT or Com end of things and they will know the life. I spend HOURS every day comuting in the Bay Area (San Francisco San Jose)etc. I have slogged in mud pulling cable under buildings. I have crawled ceilings in 110 plus temps with fiberglass insulation sticking to my skin. I have been hailed on while standing in knee deep water in a dank man hole. I have spent more than 24 hours awake working on a PBX install (phone system) quite a few times. I have driven six hours to LA where I worked a 80+ hour week just to come home to finish another job on the weekend and start all over again Monday morning.
There have been quite a few nice experiances as well and I've seen a lot of fun stuff, met interesting people, been places where most people don't get to go.
And I have a nice RX7 too five years and counting

First glance
I'm a cross over recently. Bought a 93 Mustang GT back in 94 as my first non POS car. Right after I bought it I went used car buying with a friend and we test drove a used FD (3K miles on it, wife didn't like it or something). Got such a good deal that I didn't want to back out of the GT and back then, 15K for a new car vs 30k was a lot of ground but I loved that car, the power and how it handled, that and the stereo, back then that was unheard of in a new car.
Happily after tons of upgrades, I sold the Mustang about a year ago. 10 second 1/4 mile 326 Stroker, Intercooled ATI Procharger dyno at over 650Hp, so many mods that it would take forever to mention them all but too much work to keep it running (head gasket this week, fuel problems, dyno time) so after 8 years in the Military doing everything from Tanks, to IT ( I do IT in the real world now) decided to give myself a little reward and get that car that I wanted so bad a long time ago. Took the money I made off the Mustang and bought the FD that I have now.
Engine problems (full replacement), electrical, cooling (radiator blew), vacume (who doesn't have these problems), this FD wasn't making it easy and drug me through 5-7 months of living hell to get it running right. That and a rear end hit-and-run at a stop light from some retard in a truck after I had it running right for a week (great bumper, paint spydered and my license plate was bent, styrofoam messed up but nothing else), throught that it would never get finished.
I only see maby one or two others a month on the road. Most think that it is a Porsche or something and have no idea what in the hell a rotary is. I love it because it is a car that hardly anyone else has and not everyone can own or take care of.
Devotion, its a bitch.

yeah, I worked hard and am still working hard, even though im only 17. ive worked something like 6 jobs and changed the goal car around a little bit but kept coming back to the one car that I saw and had no freaking clue what it was until i was about 15. I drove the broken down 1991 Le Baron with no A/C for a year and some change in the 90+ degree weather. i love my FD....it was alllll worth it, even the job at the carnival..........

Is your choice college or the car? Don't want to sound lame, but 16K buys a college education that lasts a lifetime.
Yeah, I busted my *** through college, then worked **** jobs to get the experience to get my dream job. But now it is paying off and the FD is great fun. My wife even likes it, doesn't understand the need to mod, but likes it none the less.
My message is this, don't sell your soul for something short term, look down the road 5 to 10 (hopefully not through bars) and make a good life decision.

I think it's definately worth it. And with the signs of a 4th gen coming out. We all better get to work..

Well I don't want to sound like a spoiled brat but college isn't an issue, my parents are going to pay for my education. I figure if they are going to be paying for my college than I can work and have a pretty decent car.
To the guy who was talking to me about insurance, I know it is going to be high but atleast I will be 18 or 19 when I actually buy the car, so that will help a little.

Lucky Shot
A friend and I were inspired to buy an FD back in 1996, so we took all our life savings....dashed into the casino and made off with US $ 25K......taking the money....we head out to Vancouver and spotted a 93 Silver FD with 18,000kms going for CAD $ 35,000. Bought her without thinking and headed back east.....Off topic, test drove a 1996 Supra TT 6 Speed Getrag....we blew the **** outta the gears, travelling at 180km/h down a 60km/h zone....the pull that Supra produces is unsurpassable......oh well, the FD is light enough to smoke any imports in 96.....a chick magnet no doubt.....
The recent 94 FD was purchased on impulse.....however, i couldn't pass on a low mileage one considering we are in 2002 now...
RX7 is a legacy, always has been...always will.....It's after an FD with curvacious angles that puzzles me till now....how did they combine the best of both worlds [excluding those who don't bother with oil change] in such a manner that entices every pedestrian that walks across your front view, with that "damn.....what a nice ride..." and not to mention those people who comes up to you and gives you that look that scares the **** outta you.....like some guy's vision look as if they are on the verge of planning a hijack on your baby in the near future...lol......those are paranoid drivers......
A human being will be driven to attain whatever object that fulfills their self-satisfaction......and nothing beats crusing down the highway......with full control of your throttle. Working hard is a virtue, however, if you look deeper into researching what the information technology or today's society has to offer, observe the profitable wave around you, jump in while it's hot and in no time, you'll be picking your R1s under 30,000miles and for all your know, you might end up with a family of FDs......
heavenscent

It all began in a college dorm. I was playing GT1 (who studies at college?) and was amazed with the RX-7. I read everything about them. After college I worked as a water well driller (50 hrs on a slow week), saved up and got my 86 gxl. Auto-Xed it, knew I wanted something faster and started scouring the internet and papers for an FD. Then my sister says that she saw one of the cars I have been searching for at a lot across town. After a test drive and talking owner down $6500 (he was gong through a divorce settlement-his loss my gain) I bought it and am still paying for it. My FC still has a blown engine that I can't afford to fix but was it worth it-HMMM?? YES

Why save? get a loan, get a good well paying job, buy the car, pay off the loan at a reasonable pace and enjoy your FD in the meantime...I make more than enough money to support the FD and her mods/needs and I only work one job... TB inc. Minnesota baby!

i've been working around 72 hours a week (maybe not too hard, i'm at work now ) to try to get a new engine for my FD. i only actually got to drive it for 5 months or so, but i still can't imagine not getting it running again.
