Who has ever driven a brand new FD?

I was lucky enough to own a FD in 1993 and find another FD with 40K miles last year.
The car , when warmed up, drives so smooth and has plenty of power. Effortless getting on the intersate and hitting 80 mph.

I bet if more FD owners had the experience of driving a stock FD that was prime, fewer modifications would be in play.Of course, some reliablity mods are useful.

My first FD had 45k miles on it. It was very smooth, but my new one has bigger tires and lowering springs, so i dont know how much worse that made it.

I bought my first one new in the spring of 93! Same color combination as my current one except it was a manual. I also had the opportunity to drive a new 2002 in Japan (there on business).

I drove my FD brand new , the day it came out fom the dealer... I'm the second owner though, my cousin was the first owner, who sold it to me w/8K miles, loved it and kept it stock for many years.

2001 is when mods started coming from left and right...

I test drove one in 1992 when I had an '87 RX-7 w/ the sport package, didn't buy one until 1998.

I remember getting back into my car and thinking that it was slow and heavy (even though it was lighter).

Yep, I love my FD in stock form. Only 37,500 miles and drives so smooth any time I please with no problems at all.

I don't race, so I really don't need it faster than it is. Plenty of power to fool around with.

Every time I open the door to drive it, the new car smell of the leather still hits me.

Thumbs up

Bought ours new in Sept. '94. Still stock, except for Bonez downpipe. Time for a vacuum hose replacement job at 83,400 miles. Dreading that... have collected a lot of info in a binder; hopefully will work as well after the Viton is installed as it did when new. Great car, except for passenger compartment heat. Smooth, quiet, fast. Definitely a keeper.

I was shopping for a 300ZX TT, and stopped at a Mazda dealer when I saw a '94 MB Base sitting out front. It was new with an auto. After a test drive, I started shopping for an FD instead. I found a nice '94 with about 17K miles. That was in early '95, and I now have about 46K miles.

my first fd drive was when a friend who worked for grassroots motorsports pulled up in front of where i worked with a cym press car that only had about 1200 miles on it. we took it to new symrna speedway for an "autocross". i considered that car to be new since the only one i had seen was at the 24hr race at daytona the january before when some factory mazda guys drove one in. that car was the fastest thing i had ever driven at that point, including my father's moderately modded 930 turbo and my then 300zx tt. i only wish my car ran half as well when i bought it, but i'm sure mine is much faster now than that cym was then.

Well.. I think mine is as close to new as you can get.. It's got 28K miles on it.. (it's a Black on black 1993 R1). It is the quietest, tightest, least rattlenest FD I have ever ridden in. I would say it's as close to new and as nice as it gets....

Fdracer rode in it today.. he can confirm my claim LOL

I drove a new CYM version in Oct/Nov of '93 and wanted it SO bad I could taste it, but my son had just been born and my (now ex) wife said "no way, no more sports cars for a while..."

Seven years later I purchased the car I have now.

In truth, I don't really remember much about my test drive other than just being SO blown away by the power (I had an '86 FC then) and the saleman's constant "okay....now take it EASY..." comments....lol! I do remember they only had 3 cars at the dealer at the time, a red touring model in the showroom that had a sunroof, (I remember commenting that my head was rubbing the roof) and a Montego Blue car like I have now, and they had just got the Competition Yellow Mica R1 car in....it was still covered in dust from the transporter.

What I think I remember the most from my test drive is the looks from EVERYONE at stop signs or as I passed them, you could literally see the "Oh my GOD...that is one of those new RX-7s!" looks on their faces. I remember feeling SO privileged to be driving such a car.

I drove a red one back in 93 with about 100 miles on it. It was a dealer test drive.. it was awsome. If I every get around to getting a 2nd FD I will rebuild it to stock.

In April of '97, I drove a new '95 with 4xx miles on it, then took home the other '95 with 104 miles. 3 days later it had Koni Yellows, Eibach springs, 17" Koenig Villains, and Toyo Proxes T1s. 3 months later it had every performance mod available at that time and was pushing 15 psi non-sequential.

I was impressed with the power during the test drive, but after getting walked by a 911 Carerra 4S and riding in Jim Dagley's 15 psi non-sequential CYM R1 (driven by Trev), I wasn't all that impressed with the stock performance any longer.
