Unhappy White Gas Smelly Smoke At Start (fd3s)

Well, I know there were other thread which talked aobut ehaxust smoking problem, but in my case it seems little different.

Every morning, or at every cold start, my fd3s shoots out alot of white gas smelling smoke out of the exhaust for the first 5min or so.

After the motor is idled for 5min fromt he cold start, it does not smoke at all even if i drive hard, or not.

My motor starts fine cold or hot, motor temp is good, idle is stable, and turbo is great.

IS ANYTHING WORNG WITH MY FD3S??

does it smell sweet, or like gas? do you ever have problems hot starting it? might just be normal cold start smoke.

-ps. CAPS LOCK.

it's coolant...either your coolant seals are bad or your rotors are warped...either way it's bad...

it could be a coolant seal however ive also heard of this being just condensation that builds up in the catalytic converter. my rx7 also smokes when i start it and it runs fine but mine only smokes for a second or two. the best thing to do is keep an eye on your coolant levels.

good luck

Yeah... are you sure it isn't water vapor? Does it linger, or dissipate after a while? Water vapor will dissipate (except during foggy weather), burnt coolant hangs around like thick cigarrette smoke.

The gasoline smell is pretty normal.

well, forgot to mention one thing. My coolant level always drops after i drive it. i add 1/3 cup of water/coolant into my radiator every 2 days or so.

Another thing is that after I drive hard and i let it idle, coolant over flows from the tank.

so what do you think is happening?

We know that won't be happening any time soon.

The engine needs new water o-rings. Fix it.

what about you guys that have a midpipe does your car smoke with the ''white'' exhaust fumes,my car does this for a minute or two then stops, this only happens when it is cold outside i never noticed it on warm to semi warm days and the exhaust fumes just smell like unconverted emissions not sweet like many describe when coolant seals are failing.

How long and how much is a water o-rings job? For future reference. Is it a DIY'er?

Found some more info here on addressing the o-rings problem:

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/o-ring_fix.html

And your symptoms of coolant and white smoke do implicate o-rings as the perpetrator, but the suggested fix doesn't sound too difficult. As compared to the aternative, a rebuild...

Why does anytiime someone sees or says they have smoke on start up, they automatically assume it's the O-rings??? It could be anything. Turbo oil seal could be bad, it could be oil blow by, etc. Don't scare the guy, gees. There's several ways to check if the coolant o-rings are bad. Take off the radiator cap and start the engine. If cooland is pushed out when cranking, your housing seals are going bad. Check your turbo if there's oil around the compressor or take off a pipe and check if there's oil present. If so, your turbo oil seal is going.

It's not just the smoke, though...

The smoke + lost coolant + coolant overflowing = bad o-ring

That's not such a reach...

i loose coolant but not that much though. Only 1/3 cup in few days, and eg temp. is still low although i drive hard. On top of that, the smoke does not smell sweet, it just smells harsh....some what like gas. Like a year ago, a mechanic told me that I need to change the radiator....

And as for the turbo, it has no oil leak or what so ever.
Could it be the radiator?

"still trying to think that its the motor thats jacked up!"
