While working on my power antenna....I found broken glass

I pulled the trunk mat and cover out and some of the plastic in the rear hatch to get to my power antenna to replace the mast and found to my dismay that at one time or another my back glass had been broken out, as there was a ton of broken glass in the spare tire well. I also noticed the spare was flat as a flitter so I took it out and noticed there had been a leak at some time (perhaps the glass was broken out during a storm?) that had let just enough water accumulate to corrode the bottom of my spare tire's wheel, making it to where the bead won't seat right and thus leak air out.
This would also explain the fact that it was noted by a glass repair shop I had taken my car to for another reason that I had a non-factory seal around the glass of the hatch.
Now...what gets me about this is my car was previously owned by the local Mazda dealer's wife. I am the second owner according to all the paperwork and I have all the factory service records so I am perplexed as to why someone fixed the car with a non-factory seal?
And why would someone do such a shitty repair job that they wouldn't even vacuum out the broken glass from the spare tire wheel well?

Note to self: next time looking at an rx7 to purchase, check the wheel well and spare tire (underneath too!)

How long you had the car?

If I were you and it hasn't been more than a couple years since you bought the car, I would call the previous owner and tell him what you found, see what they say.

I bought the car in October of 2000. It has impeccable records and was in a 'like new' condition then with only 60K on the clock. I mean, it obviously had been very well taken care of (if you can call nothing but dealer service "well taken care of"...lol) but I had noticed a few things that sort of stood out that weren't disclosed. Like I had seen evidence of paint overspray in a couple of areas, like from a repair. But the dealer said it had never been wrecked.
I know the service manager of that dealer well. I am tempted to see if he can dredge up anything, just for grins.

Mazda keeps good maintenance records. They must have taken it somewhere else to avoid leaving a paper trail.

How do you own a car for 7 years and NEVER look in the spare tire area? Not even during a routine cleaning? Christ man, have you ever popped your hood?

I once found broken glass in the bottom of a door in a Honda Accord I used to own. I guess it must be common practice to not clean it up at glass repair shops.
