Where to start

Well I just picked up a 93 RX-7 and it has some issues.....

When I was driving it home today, it seemed to bog under wide open throttle. When half throttling it, it seems to take off great especially once the turbos kick, but under wide open throttle it bogs heavily to the point where it barely moves. I was in 3rd gear and I punched it on the freeway and at 80 MPH it just bogged until I let off, it didn't even gain 5 MPH and I held the gas down a good 5 seconds.

Also, I have two small oil leaks, one seems to be coming from the oil drain plug, the other I can't see yet as I haven't been under the vehicle completely.

I'm thinking the bogging is ignition related, atleast I'm hoping. Also, I was reading that the 93 coil packs need to be replaced. What is the deal with those?

If anyone can give me some pointers of where to start I'd appreciate it.

It's the middle of the night, wait til daytime to get some responses. And in the meantime, post up whatever mods have been done to the thing. Do you have a boost gauge, and if so what is the boost doing when this happens?

It is 100% stock right now, and my boost gauge will be here tomorrow. I will hook it up and let you guys know what kind of numbers I'm seeing.

My car bogged real bad when the ignition coils were dying so that might be your problem, car also had a lot of other problems though...

Mine was doing this due to bad injectors. Does the CEL come on? Does the bogging happen at a specific RPM or does it just do it under load some of the time? It can be hard to tell the difference between fuel problems and ignition problems.

It will help too when you get the boost gauge. It's easy to max out the boost both while on the highway and from a stop. So if for some reason it's boosting at 12psi and hitting fuel cut, you'll find out then. If you can get fuel pressure gauge, that's a good idea also.

Yea I'm probably going to do a complete tune on this thing, replace the wires, plugs, coils, and I'm debating getting the Apexi Power FC + Commander so I can see a little bit more of what's going on in the motor and tweak it a bit. I'm also going to have the injectors cleaned, if not replaced.

My major concern at the moment though, besides the bogging, is the oil leak. I can see that one leak is coming from the oil pan, atleast I'm pretty sure it is. It actually looks like it is leaking from the drain plug, but I haven't been all the way under the car yet to look, I will today though. The other leak is on the driver side almost horizontal to the oil pan leak. That can't be good lol....I just hope it isn't a seal because I don't feel like pulling the motor after just getting it in my posession yesterday

This car definitely needs some TLC and is going to be a major project, as there are tons of small things wrong with it, and hopefully nothing big in the motor department.

Oil leaks around the oil pan are quite common and usually minor. Keep an eye on them and make sure it's not seeping from a higher point on the block (such leaks often wet the entire oil pan, drain plug, and subframe).

When I get under there today, I'll take pictures and post them here. My boost gauge is also supposed to be here today, I just tracked it. WHen it is, I'll pop it on and take the car for a drive. Hopefully I can figure something out.

Just curious, what do you mean by CEL?

I got my boost gauge, I'm going to wire it up in an hour or so and go for a drive. Why would it be maxing out or spiking boost wise if it is a stock setup? Is that common?

I'll see if I can get my hands on a decent fuel pressure gauge too, I'm sure it will help quite a bit while trying to figure this problem out.

OK I the boost gauge hooked up, here is what I've found so far:

It's got about 12-14psi of Vacuum at idle...

Under wide open throttle it's got 6 PSI when it is bogging, and when I half throttle it before it bogs it hits like 8-10 then it bogs again.

Any ideas where to start now??

I believe its on the firewall more towards the drivers side. Its a little black square that has a vaccume line connecting to the underside of it. From the sound of things i wouldnt say thats the problem. Mine fell off once and the car would barely even run and even stalled out on me.

My gut instinct from what you have said tells me you have a fuel problem. when was the last time you changed your fuel filter?? You have good vaccume at idle so i doubt you have a leak.

I just picked the car up the day before yesterday

I don't think it has been maintenanced like it should have, so I'm goign to basically be doing a standard tune-up. I'll try to replace the fuel filter, I'm replacing the plugs tomorrow and if that doesn't help anything I'm going to try the wires, then the coils. Luckily I have some help in town, and he is going to take a look at it for me next week.

I also ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through the motor, but I doubt it will help anything

I think i remember seeing that car on here before. The previous owner got flamed pretty hard for some of the interior like the floor mats. Looks like a pretty clean car overall tho. Congrats on the new ride.

The plugs are a really good place to start with this type of diagnosis. If i were you i would take some pictures of the plugs when you get them out tomorrow and maybe sombody on here can read them for you so you can get a better idea of what may be going on before you go cough up a bunch of money on some coils.

Yea I'll get those things out tomorrow and take some pictures.

The interior is horribly painted, I guess it had a tan interior and he wanted a black one, and instead of buying a new interior he decided to half *** paint it. Worst paint job I've ever seen, he didn't even use adhesive promoter before painting it. Today I pressure washed all the paint off the kick boards because they were the main part flaking away, and I re-painted them. Here are some pictures of that little project:

To be honest, he had a cool idea with the interior paint, he just did a shitty job. Next week I'm going to go down to mazda and order a new trim piece that goes around the sterio and a/c controls, and then I'll get it paint matched to the rest, because that piece was the worst part of the paint job, it is completely warped and has paint runs in some spots.

The real pain in teh *** is going to be pulling out the interior from the back seat area and stripping the paint off, then re-painting. The only thing that they did a good job on was the seats and the doors, other than that the rest sucks.
