Where to place EGT sensor?

Hi,

i recently got my new Defi Gauges, Boost and EGT, but i'm not sure where to place the EGT sensor.

As i still have my serial turbos (i drive them non-seq), it's not that easy to find a place before the turbos, without unplugging the whole unit.

Some people told me, "put them in the manifold wherever they don't collide with the flapper doors, but possibly one of you had the same problem and can tell where exactly the best place is (a picture would be fine).

Thanks.

on the mainfold is the best place, if you cannot then on the downpipe very near the turbo is the next best thing.

If you are on the stock twins, you will have to put it on the downpipe.

...well, this would be the simple way, but temperatures would be affected, too.

I case of unmounting the turbos and manifold, placing the EGT sensor in the hole from the flapper door would be a good way.

Perhaps i try it with the dp, and next season with the mainifold version, just to see the difference in temperatures....

Anyone has a picture where they placed the sensor? (I am on the stock twins too, JDM).

If you put is post turbo then add 200 degrees to the temp reading to get a pre turbo temp at wot.....

I hope your EGT gauge reads up to 2000 degrees

SO, best is:

To the manifold

OR

Downpipe, as near as possible of turbos

???

The best place for an EGT probe is essentially as close to the engine exhaust ports as possible. Since the factory exhaust manifold is tough to mount to, the next best place would be on the downpipe. If you have good skills you may , but it would be tricky off the rear turbo housings...

goodluck!

or go dual egt... and place in each runner... pre-turbo.

getting an ACCURATE EGT reading is very important so as to arrive at optimum tune and engine life.

it will not happen post turbo.

the EGT varies greatly between pre and post depending on throttle position and a million other things.

i run two Garrett TO4 turbos. one on the front rotor, one on the rear. there is no connection whatsoever between the turbos until their outputs merge in my IC and the two 3 inch downpipes merge at the midpipe. my EGT thermocouples are less than an inch from each exhaust flange at the engine.

as an experiment i removed the rear EGT and placed it temporarily just after the front turbo. i logged both EGTs at the same time... one pre turbo, one post turbo.

i found a great variance in temp depending on throttle postion. you can't just add 200 degrees and, of course, different setups will generate different varying numbers. so forget post turbo.

i have run two EGTs for 4 years and it was great to get the temperatures but then you are in a position as to determining what do they mean.

most just look at the top-end number. you can perhaps gain a great deal of spool by using EGTs to tune between zero and one bar boost.

you are looking for 1450 in most of that area. if you are too cold and are seeing the correct AFR add timing (til you get above 1400) a degree at a time keeping an eye on knock.

topend EGTs should be around 1550=1600.

i would guess the stock manifold, being highly restictive would be a tad on the hotside.

if you are running the stock manifold i do suggest you bite the bullet and remove it and situate your thermocouples in the runners near the engine.

i also suggest you skip the gauge and log them so you will actually able to do some tuning.

howard

I'm on the twins and I got a O2 sensor bung to 1/8 npt adapter from egauges.com and plan to use the stock o2 sensor location.

When I get around to pulling the turbos I'll probably drill and tap the mani near the rear exhaust port since I only have one egt and the rear is the one that runs hotter, right?

these pics are from another forum member's installation (David0ff), in the manifold post turbo right before the downpipe flange.

Does anyone remember their max recorded POST-TURBO EGT's? I need to know this information. I'm not asking this information for what you're initially thinking so don't worry...

Bringing this thread back from the dead—I just did this dual EGT mod to my manifold as well. However, I noticed that the two runners in the manifold connect to each other. Now, I'm afraid that the EGTs won't be accurate since the front runner takes all the exhaust gas for the primary until the flapper door opens for the secondary turbo. Did you run into any issues?
