Where do you buy your engines?

Hi Everyone,

Currently I have everything for my 93 FD except the engine and turbos.

Im kinda leery about net purchase (aka ebay). And I can't seem to find one locally with good compression.

Does anyone have a recommended source of where to buy a 13B with stock turbos? At this point I simply just want the car movable, I'll work on improvements later (need to clear out the shop )

Thanks in advance!

I've heard good things about

David Jerome (djseven on the forums here)
Rotary Ressurrection (Kevin Landers)
Banzai Racing
Neptunespeed (they're in CA)
JRX Rotary (also in CA)

When I need a motor/turbos I will probably stay local, but if I were to get someone else to do a motor for me it would be in the list above.

Goodfella's place is also pretty good. I can't remember the name but I think it was like IRP motorsports? And it's up in NJ.

Elusyve, a few questions before offering advice:

* Do you have all the engine components as well (manifolds, emissions, etc)?
* Are you going to keep the car or are you fixing it to sell it?

Manifolds I have. Emissions.... not sure. I was hoping to purchase a complete engine with manifold and emissions item, something i can simply drop in and go.

The car Im fixing to keep.

Unless you find someone who is doing a non-rotary engine swap (i.e. selling off their engine & components), you'd have to look at getting something like a JDM engine. If you were just looking to drop something in and sell it, that would be a decent option. However, given this:

I would recommend doing it right. Get a good core built by a reputable shop. Given you are on the east coast, I would suggest talking to:

http://irperformance.com/

or

http://www.pfsupercars.com/

After that, source the rest of the parts you may need by talking to members like "Fritz Flynn" and new parts (like a new wiring harness) from Malloy Mazda. This will be more expensive up front, but you'll pay less in the end.

I also recommend IRP. Great guys. They are honest and really committed to their work. Its pretty amazing. I'll be sending my car to them again. I remember there was a period of time where I would be there every saturday to get stuff done.

For parts, along with Fritz I also recommend purerx7 (you would be surprised at how cheap some things are over in Japan rather than locally) and str8ryd. I absolutely 100% trust these guys and they have never failed me. spooledupracing is another for new parts as well. Some of his prices for certain parts are quite low. He also doesn't sell all OEM parts so make sure you ask what you are getting. What he does sell should pass muster OEM or not though.

+1

i honestly hate piecing together complete engines so when someone comes to me asking for everything i avoid it like the plague. you could ship out what you have and have the shop complete what you are missing or pick up a JDM core engine and have it rebuilt if you plan on keeping it for a good long while.

It sounds like your saying the JDM engines are not the way to go? What are the differences if there is any?

I was considering this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-M...Q5fAccessories

This seems like a perfect drop in solution for me, but I called the guy and they offer no warranty on anything. I asked them what the compression readings are since he advertised "good" compression and he couldnt tell me either.

I dont have anything as engine core for the guys you've recommended to rebuild upon either.

Apologies if I sound like a complete noob.... im just so confused as to what to do at this point. And budget is maxed at 2k...

I offer longblocks minus wiring harnesses starting at $3300.00 shipped. This is a fresh rebuilt engine with a real warranty. That stuff on ebay is a joke, it really is just rolling the dice. I can have people come in and speak about "gauranteed good compression" engines if you like. Some success stories on ebay engines but it is really just rolling the dice. If you want quality you have to pay a little more. Mine would come with everything you need to drop in and drive with the exception of the wiring harness as I dont have any at the moment.

For some reason or other, our engine came with our car, back in '94.

You need to find something used and hope that it is in good shape OR wait until you have more money saved up. Nearly all JDM importers on Ebay try to pass off blown engines as "good compression" , we have never received one that did not need rebuilding.

Thanks for all the great input guys!

I think Im definitely not going the ebay route or the "engine importers" route. Your experiences has pretty much solidified my concerns about that.

I think I will try to save up some and take up on djseven's offer. If Im going to do this, might as well do it right from the start.

/cheers!

PS: I will be taking pics of everything soon and post a rebuilding thread for self motivation
