Lightbulb Where do these go? (pics)

Hi all,

Well its been 2 years since I took my FD off the road and I'm pleased to say she now starts properly, idles lovely and is ready for a test station visit. The final parts I need to put back on are these heatshields:

As I say, its been over 2 years since I took them off, so if anyone has a photo of them fitted that I can see to help jog my memory that would be great. I can't for the life of me remember how they go on the car, despite lying underneath it for over an hour scratching my head

The one on the right is a heat shield for the motor mount, I think the pass side.

The one on the left is a heat shield that goes around the exhaust manifold I think.

turbo manifold = exhaust manifold and indeed the one on the right is for the pass side motor mount.

Thanks for the replys, I kindof guess roughly where they go, have any of you guys got an images of that area of the engine bay with them fitted? As I say I lay under the car for a bit, looking at different ways they could fit but I couldn't see any exposed threads/bolts for them to line up to.

All help appreciated

How about checking a parts manual for the location of these? I found this through a search:

Thanks everyone,

The one on the left now has a home

I still can't seen to locate the one on the right though.... could anyone snap a piccy of theirs installed?

Also... how many of you guys run without these? The reason being that when I was putting the car back together, if I left it idling for 20minutes, the boot on the steering rack arm to the steering wheel would get so hot that it would start to smoke.... that's surly not normal? (RHD RX)

With the heatshields in place there is an obvious cut out for the rack so maybe on RHD cars this shield is absolutely essential?

The one on the right goes on top of your passenger side motor mount. If u crawl under the car and put ur head at the back of the sub frame right by where the tranny meets the motor and look at the motor mount you will see the bolt holes. I would definently run the heat shields, there was a guy that posted not to long ago that destoryed a motor mount from the excessive heat coming off the downpipe and not running the heat shield.

This is the best pic i can get from the top. Circled in red is the corner of the mount, the rest is under the downpipe and wastegate.

The one on the right is easy. The side facing the camera goes down. Look for the tapped holes in the mount that correspond to the 3 holes in the heat shield.

The one on the left is a little more goofy. It covers the lower half of the turbos. The hole on the bottom-left bolts into the turbo manifold toward the rear of the turbos. The u-shaped cutout goes toward the front, and I think the cutout passes around one of the actuator arms. The stud on the upper-left just hangs out pointing toward the wheelwell, and bolts into the heat shield for the upper-half of the turbos. The two studs that point downward I think bolt into a small heat shield in the area of the turbo control actuator arm.

I recommend putting them both on. You don't want the radiant heat or oil leaks getting on the motor mount, and the turbos need protected from the elements to avoid thermal shock.

Thankyou so so much guys

I'll have another look tomorrow and can hopefully sort it out, when I think about all the work I've done its a bit embarrassing asking about these but I guess it has been about 30 months since I took them off (I'm ashamed of this as there wasn't anything really that wrong with the car)

Hopefully I'll get her to the MOT station (Similar to your smog test) in the next week and then I can get back on the roads.

Also regarding the other members dead motor mount, I am not at all surprised, with the shields off and me just idling the engine, there was white smoke coming from the steering arm boot (RHD so next to tubbys) and somewhere else underneath (I'm assuming that's the motor mount). I took the decision in November to not drive it and find the fault... I'm hoping this is it and that issue will now be done. Boosting the car must have cooked them alive

ps. If she is all ok, then I'm hoping to take her here (Its a new circuit in the UK and a few of us will be amongst some of the lucky folk to be the first to drive it - I can't wait!



Towards the bottom left of the pic, the corner is called rocket. It has a 15m drop and is being dubbed the 'mini corkscrew' - personally I can't wait to go around it (probably backwards )

Just a quick reply to say thanks to you all for your pointers, I got back under the car and felt like such a fool when I spotted where everything went - still, 2 and a bit years since I removed it so I can forgive myself

well more-a-less

Car now starts, runs, doesn't overheat, doesn't boil the coolant, doesn't shake around n be all rattly, in fact it starts first time and does as she's told

So today, I drove it for the first time in 2 and a half years and wow is it weird; the new short shifter feels crazy :-o - I'm hoping some new g/b oil will smooth her out and make her a little less notchy.

Anyway here are the obvious pictures:












This is a short clip of starting the car and her idling nicely, as well as me tentatively taking her to the nose bleeding heights of 3500rpm

All that's left to do is sort the horn out - god knows what's going on there, the relay clicks and it works about 1 in 10 attempts, new wire time me thinks. Also ignore the odd wheel, the other 16" is getting the valve repaired and I've not bothered putting all the 18"s on

*phew* MOT might be tomorrow afternoon if I do these two little jobs :flag: but more likely will be early next week
