Anybody know when they made the switch on their new and reman engine?

I thought the metal one is a 20B gasket? When I ordered one before Ray from Malloy told me this.

I think if you join the mazdacomp...whatever you can order them.

What do you gain...not having to scrap and clean the front cover

also don't have to worry about front cover gasket leaks like you do with the gunk/atv type gasket (like the oil pan gasket). If your PCV goes out and your letting pressurized air into the oil pan and front cover area, you'll lose the oil pan gasket and not both. Front cover gasket replacement is around $1500 depending on the shop. It's worth it to go metal.

I recently got 2 front cover gasket from Mazda dealer here in town (one weekago, they had to order) and it wasn't metal... Hmm.. I'm wondering what this part number is. I would rather get the metal one..

Mazcare in Marietta Ga. first told me about it a couple years ago. Not sure if it's the 20b front cover gasket like mentioned above or what, but they haven't had any front cover leak/seaps since using them.

r71 has one on his motor. Tim, have a PCV go out on you recently? 95's never came with one, wonder if a poor quality PCV was the reason?

Tim,

I replaced mine a couple of years ago- it's metal. Purchased from Mazda Motorsports with an FD part number. I believe that's all they stock for FDs now (Call Tim or Scott at Mazda Comp.) and this has been the case for quite some time. If dealers are selling paper gaskets, those have been sitting on their shelves, or someone's warehouse, for years.

I don't know if the new FD front cover gasket is metal but I have been told the 20B one is.

When I bought my Mazda reman from Malloy a couple years ago it came with a paper gasket on the front cover. I know this because I had to replace it due to a bad oil leak recently...

How much for the front metal gasket and did you do the work your self.
My 93FD (15K on Mazda reman) just started leaking. I had a bad PVC valve that I think blew out the paper gasket. Is it possible to replace with out pulling the oil pan out or for that matter the under carrage tray. This sucks because I just installed the Efini turbos and now I need to do a front tear down.

Sure would like to hear some feed back on the metal gasket install if you did the work yourself.

I have always thought the PCV could be a weak link and if they do go bad, watch out oil pan and front cover gaskets, since they'll be leaking soon. You have to do the oil pan/front cover at the same time since they both overlap each other, if it's your front cover. You have to unbolt the front cover from the oil pan to remove the front cover. You can always try to gunk it back into place with the oil pan, but why take a chance with it leaking around the front of the oil pan later on...resulting in a oil pan reseal job.

If your getting a new engine, check to see if it's got the metal gasket, if not, get one and install it while it's sitting in front of you, then drop it into your car. The normal places to look for front cover leaks is 2, 5, 7, and 11 positions according to Mazcare.

Gene, How's things going up there? You and the wife still doing track events? What tracks are up there?

Tim

Well I'm going to drop the engine sub frame and have it bead blasted and powerder coated bright red so I can get more contrast when working under the car. Anyone know where I can get the metal front cover gasket. Also I plan to go ahead and upgrade to the pinapple racing oil pan. Anyone have it on there FD?
