what's missing from the stock FD?

so... i've been wanting to make something for my FD (and maybe even for yours too) in an effort to learn how to do more of the processes we are capable of doing at my work. we can pretty much do any manufacturing process you can think of so, i'm not too terribly limited by that, but i don't know what i could do. the first thing that came to mind was making something that would combine the MazdaSpeed style body stiffeners with a differential bar. do any of you guys have any interesting suggestions? check my vbgarage to see what my mods are to see what i have to work with

let me make one thing clear though, i'm not trying to make money, i'm trying to learn a little bit more about DFMA to improve my usefulness at my job and possibly make something that people (and their RX-7s) may actually benefit from.

What materials are you limited with? Urethane motor mounts possibly.

the urethane motor mounts are already out there though... aren't they? i'm really not limited material wise either... use your imagination and i can "probably" get ahold of it.

a radar detector in a guage pod that you can cover with a fake gauge face if the cops pull you over.

How about some interior pieces that don't crack and scratch all of the time. Or maybe some pullies... specifically the main-drive pulley cuz those are pretty expensive.

Something like this.....

The red button = On/Off
The black rectangle = Volume Control Wheel
Orange needle/marker AND LED lights = Signal Intensity

seriously, i'll start looking into the possibility of the 52mm radar detector and psuedo gauge pod cover areXseven, if anything ever comes of it, you'll get the credit there buddy. the unit itself may need to be hidden somewhere other than the gauge pillar for what you are doing... and we could just bastardize some wiring from its guts to an "el cheapo" boost gauge and make the controls like you suggested. perhaps the units body could be fit into a neat little plug that would replace the center channel speaker? i know this sucks for some of you guys that have the center channel gauge pod, but still... its just an idea.

of course, since in some states this would be illegal to own, this product would only be for "competition use only" or would have to be sold only to people who live in states where radar detectors are not illegal

the interior pieces may get a little out of what i can do for free at work, BUT, i'll look into it, should be easy to make molds for them and will just have to find a different type of plastic with a little more surface toughness to it.

good ideas here guys... thanks... i'll start looking into what i can do and will keep ya'll posted. keep 'em coming if you have anymore (the steering column is a bit out of my reach right now sorry)

You need to approach "Autometer" OR.. Detector company like "Passport" with "our" concept!

we would need to have a concept to show them first but then, it was completely your idea, all i did was come up with a place to hide the body of the detector... which is really quite insignificant. maybe you should take it to them... its a great idea.

Driver door pocket lids. Make one that matches and has a half-decent metal pin hinge, and you'll be $$.

Copy That. I'll call local Patent Atty's. It should'nt cost more than a few thousand dollars to get the Patent started. Then approach the Big Boys with the idea/patent see if they'll like the idea. They'll use there own engineers to put it together.

If not, then it'll take bigger bucks to manufacture the whole thing on "our"/my own.
