Simple green can do damage to aluminum pieces if you don't rinse it off 100%.

I suggest searching for engine bay cleaning since I remember turning up a crapload about this subject in the past.

^^lol

i just get regular autozone engine degreaser, it did the job pretty good, not really clean like i've seen others but maybe ill try that kaboom stuff, never heard of it though.

i remember like 6 years ago, they had this bootleg ghetto cereal out called kaboom, my mom bought it one day and it tasted GREAT! my neighborhood used to play basketball outside and everytime we made a shot, we would say, "its gotta be the kaboom!!" lol

Simple Green Automotive Degreaser won't harm aluminum (at least that what's it say on the bottle). I 've been using during my rebuild with great results. Although I do rinse off all parts throughly (as I would do with any cleaner).

Castrol Super cleaner or whatever it's called, it's in a big purple bottle, smells like nailpolish remover, and will take stink off of poop. That stuff made the engine bay of my 86 RX-7 look like a really clean engine bay from an 86' RX-7 Seriously though, it'll take everything off, including the oil that was burnt onto my hood.

My personal favorite for real tough jobs is Foamy Engine Brite. Not the regular Engine Brite, has to be the Foamy. That did one hell of a job on the REPU when I first got it and was starting the motor swap.

simple green

if you're worried about it harming aluminum, whether that is actually true or not, just drive around for awhile once you're done cleaning. the heat from an FD will be sure to burn off anything left

I really wanna try steam cleaning at a good car wash joint. My fear tho is could it harm the electronics in any way (eg. my HKS Twin Power sitting in the engine bay, etc)?

I've also heard the simple green can stain aluminum. I read somewhere simple green them selves stated this. I wouldn't take the chance use something else

These don't work worth a crap and they only last a few minutes, and the steam pressure is really low - you need to upgrade to a high end one you can get at Home Depot or Sears for about $110. They come with attachments and brushes too.
Steam only loosens the material however; you still need to have something to remove it. I recommend Advance Auto Parts brake parts cleaner - in the red can. This stuff is the best general solvent in the world (I've tried CRC, you name it - even stuff that's now illegal) - and the best part, it's nonflammable. I know, because I tried to set **** on fire with it, and then I realized that the can said "nonflammable". I buy it by the case.

In addition, those armor-all cleaning (CLEANING) wipes in the purple and white can have an uncanny ability to remove oil and dirt from your rubber hoses, paint, etc.

All right, here's a really stupid idea I just thought of...how about using a pressure washer after letting the engine soak in something akin to Simple Green Auto Degreaser? Has anyone tried this? What did you use to ensure no water got into the electronics?

Just a thought

I'll have to give Kaboom a try, but for now, Castrol Super Clean gets my vote. It's only 6 bucks for a gallon of it at Walmart.

I used it to clean an engine that I yanked at a junkyard. This thing was a roach...covered in layers of dirt/grease/grime. When I got done with it and took it to the machine shop for boring/honing, the shop thought that I had already had it hot-tanked.

I'm a big fan of Super Clean - I've never ceased to be amazed at what that will do.

My new cleaning combo is the Armor All orange cleaning wipes and Armor All wipes. Clean with one, shine with the other. I recently bought an '87 base for $300 that was HELLA dirty - I used that for the whole car, inside and under the hood. Really cleaned up good.

I gotta try some Kaboom, though . Where do you get that? Dunno if I've ever seen it.

Dale

I have to put in my vote for Castrol's Super Clean. That stuff is some seriously amazing $hit. I never tried it on an engine for fear of dulling the metal.

Oh yeah, gotta add that Castrol Super Clean is a terrific ant killer. I use it instead of RAID.

i dont like castrol superclean for the reason that it IS pretty harsh. if youre using it on a pulled engine. . . yeah, go ahead. . . but as far as engine bays go. . . kaboom. i left that stuff on there forever and it had no ill effects.

i havend used superclean in a while, but i remember reading on the bottle that youre NOT to leave it on for a long time. . . or something like that.
