What's the Easiest Way to Take the Oil Pressure Sending Unit Off?

I searched all over the place for this and all I came up with was talk about oil pressure problems and solutions, but not much on the actual replacement of it.

I know this is a silly question for many of you, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
I'm swapping out my factory sending unit out for brand new one and I'm wondering if I should be putting a large socket on the end of the thing (~32mm?) or try to squeeze a 17mm wrench on the fitting closer to the block.

If I attack from the 17mm fitting it looks like I'd have to take the plugs out of the way so I could turn the wrench. However, I think I might be able to, put a socket on the end and turn it. But, will I be able to get it off in one piece with a socket? I'd hate to waste money on a new socket if I don't need one.

This weekend is my first real venture into working on one of these. Mine has low miles, and it really hasn't needed anything work done beyond regular maintenance. I learned how fun changing the spark plug wires is. Whee! I figured while I have it apart down there I'd finally fix that oil pressure sending unit too.

I knew these things were a joy to work on. Man, I'm not looking forward into tearing the car apart if things get serious.
