That's 140 F, that's kind of high. What is the ambient temp when you see this AIT and what kind of driving condition (idle, cruising, wot etc.)?

In Texas summer heat I see anywhere from 50-56C intake temps, at night no higher than 45C.

wrap your cold pipe so it doesn't heat soak.

You could also go the extra mile and coat it to keep out engine bay heat.

Up here in Michigan my intake temps will range from as low as 25 (currently at night) to as high as 55 or so in traffic during the summer. Generally during the summer months, I'll see intake temps ranging from 40-45 cruising around.

self fusing silicone tape... it's cheap and works good. the pipe will still heat soak if you sit in traffic forever, but it does take quite a bit longet to do so. i think i might wrap the whole greedy elbow, but i'm not sure yet.

oh yea...
also, i left that silicone elbow pretty long-since silly-cone doesn't conduct heat very well.

60 is high.... I have a pettit smic and I usually see 50-55 (I'm in hawaii). Fully heatsoaked (sitting in traffic) will go up to proabbly 60-65

While moving on a humid 90+ in Florida as high as 55 at night low 40's, with a Greedy FMIC. For the most part it 30-40F above ambient at 55 mph during the day. Early in the morning just before sunrise it's only 20F. I would guess that it's always about 20F above ambiet air at just above the road. That not that far off from my stock unit before the upgrade. The real difference is when I'm boosting, the stock unit was normally around 120C the FMIC has never gone above 65C and thats a huge difference.

The funny thing is that most us of replace our elbo which was more resitant to heat soaking with the greddy.

The sensor is mostly likely getting heak soaked to due the location in the UIM, because you should be siing maximum colling temps with a FMIC . You could move it to the intercooler piping, somewhere after the intercooler. This will gove you a more accurate reading of temps.

For example, when I am driving my FD, temperatures will start at ambient and head up to the 45-55C mark. Then I shut the the engine (shopping, movie, eating, whatever), I come back out and fire it up and IAT are in the 65-75C mark and takes a good 20mins+ to cool back down.

The short of it is I think alot of the temperature is coming off of the UIM.

wow those are some hot temps. i guess im lucky being up in the Vancouver area. If i see 30C thats hot for me.. I debate wether my cold air to the front grill it making a difference. its about the same it seems from having it right in front of the turbo. I have most of my pipes wrapped.. seems to work good.. on a cool night soak them with cold water and your good for awhile :P

for wrapping pipes, 2" is the way to go, but 1" or 1.5" if better for harnesses.

I see 4-15C (7-27F) over ambient (depending on how much I'm playing) around town with my ASP Medium. If I end up in stop and go in the heat of the day of course it goes up significantly from there until I turn on my IC Fan and/or get moving.

Using the "Turbo Calculator" internet site, it appears that 10C=10HP (roughly). This is real world HP; who doesn't agree their car makes more power when it is cold outside? I made a bunch of mods to lower my intake temps. I used to see 50C on the highway, now I'm never over 33C. If I go directly to a highway from start up, my intake temps are ambient to 3C above ambient. If the car gets heat soaked ( high40's to low 50's), my intake temps drop back to around 5-8C above ambient after 5 miles of highway driving.

My car was built and ran for years in Austin, Tx. I was told by the builder not to boost it when doing so would result in AITs greater than 20c over ambient. I was told to apply that rule weather ambient was hot or cold. Simple and easy rule to follow. Anyone else live by this rule or have good reason to discount? Of course, with factors like engine core temps and heat range of plugs combined with boost levels relevant to octane rating, etc. etc, nothing is ever all that simple.

Measures take to lower AIT: heat shield between turbo amd LIM & UIM; ceramic coated turbo, DP, LIM, UIM; insulating spacer between UIM & LIM; 4" mandrel bent cold air intake. Note my description above was about low/no boost running. Under those conditions, I stay near ambient.
If I wind out 2nd & 3rd, I'll get no more than a 1C increase; that I attribute to my Bell SMIC (24X9X3). A couple of weeks ago, I did a road tune with Steve Kan. That consisted of repeated 3rd gear pulls on I95. Steve said the AIT never got above 37C. My guess would be ambient was in the mid 80F's.

my intake temps are generally about 20-25*f above ambient. and that is with a crappy little blitz stock mount and apex'i intakes above the radiator. i know, i know. i need a better intercooler and a heatshield around the intakes. i've only had the thing a week.
