What would you do ?

Hey gang, I am new to FD scene and boy have I jumped in ! This spring I purchased a 93 R1 JDM roller with a water leak in the engine. I love the vintage red. About the only addition beyond stock is a set of mazdaspeed MS01s in fantastic shape. Over the last few months I have thought about what to do with it and bought the odd part. Now I have an Atkins rebuild kit sitting here, the engine out a just getting cleaned up, and an Power FC on its way. Oh ya, the car also boasts a catback system and down pipe as well. No intake, no cooler mods yet. Only 62,000 km and very clean. This car has not seen salt - means allot up here in Canada.

Now this weekend, I am bringing a black 93 home with front end damage as a parts car. 110,00 km on it. Lots of aftermarket in it. (even a Power FC - that makes two!)

Already the wife is asking just how many of these things I need ? They made a yellow as well didn't they ? Hmmm.

Well, the question is, if the parts car motor at 110,000 km has good compression and has had vacuum line updates - what would be the motor to throw in the "keeper" FD? By the time I have the first engine rebuilt it will be good as new. But man, I haven't even got to drive a FD yet !

What to do...

My Keeper:

I say toss the good motor in and take that thing out!! Then rebuild that motor so in a month when the used one goes you got it handy.

Since you want to try rebuilding it yourself, just put the spare motor in. That way you can take your time rebuilding the motor.

Yea, get it running with the spare motor first.

The "running FD" feeling will keep you interested in the car through the various hurdles.

Yep if the other motor is good I would drop that in and then take your time rebuilding the other motor the way you want it.

Agree with everyone above except the V8 guy! LOL

It's a good situation to be in to have two motors! If you're just learning that motor (as I will be) it will give you time to really dissect it and understand how it works and take your time on the rebuild without that constant itching to just get it done so you can get on the road!!!

I wouldn't even bother putting in the used motor. If it really does have 110,000 kms on it, it's doubtful it has a lot more life left in it so you'll just be doubling up your effort. If you don't mind R&R'ing the engine more than once, go for it.

RX = rotary experiment

Stay rotary, throw in the decent engine, and rebuild the waterleaking one.

Well, it certainly is appealing to slide in the donor engine while the original is torn down. For those of you who have been into it longer than me, what is a typical swap time ? Pulling the first one probably took a weekend, but then I bagged and labeled everything to make an easy drop in when done.

The original motor was all stock except for the cat back system. If I drop the donor engine in for awhile and slip in the Power FC that is running it, I am going to have to ensure all the intake and intercooler parts stay with the motor as well aren't I ? I don't need to run lean.

I can't wait to get the second car here tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the new Power FC I bought online just arrived. Not much need for it now !

I may be willing to pick up that other PFC if you want to let it go.

Yep will definitely be selling the extra PFC. The unit that just arrived is sweet ! The controller looks like new.

Just got the black parts car home - what a beauty ! It is heart breaking to see how much this guy put into his car before tearing one front corner to shreds.

The engine runs sweet and I will have to start an inventory tomorrow of all the speed parts that will be coming for sale. One item that caught my eye was a set of blue and yellow coil over shocks mounted in the car. He said he had them in for a couple hundred kilometers when he smacked up the car. Have to figure out what they were.

It is going to be tough to sell some the best stuff but I gotta get some of today's investment back before the wife starts to tap her foot.

I would guess at them being Ohlins PCV based on the blue and yellow. Based on the teasers I'd say you found an amazing parts car. You're easily going to make $2k+ off parts that can all be removed in 1hr!

Holy cow, these coilovers are ZEAL. I think this is good right ?

This is what I see under the car with the Zeal labels:

They sure look like these:

Anybody need some shocks ? The seller said he put new shocks on 500 km ago but wow - I did not expect these !
