What wire is this?

In the driver's side of the engine bay, back near the firewall and down low underneath the oil filter pedestal and underneath the steering column is a thick black cable with a red stripe. Coming out of this cable is a single wire (in my case it's white but it looks like it may have been spliced in there by a P.O.). It's not connected to anything. Any ideas what it might be? It's been disconnected for the 3 years I've owned the car so far as I can tell.

Sounds like a ground wire. IIRC there is one in that area that attaches close to the PS bracket or to one of the irons.

May want to post a picture up. That sounds like the main power wire going to the starter (the thick cable) which does normally have some other wires in the bundle.

i just did some wiring on my car and IIRC i think that's the smaller wire that goes to the starter. it's not exactly thick compared to the starter but i think it's a 16 gauge wire.

He did say that it's been disconnected for the past 3 years since he bought the car.

it's probably the oil level sender wire.

check the oil pan sender and see if the wire is still there and if anything is plugged in
