Question What is water injection?? (i searched)

Hey, i was just wondering what exactly this is. I've read and realize that its something used in addition to an intercooler to cool down intake temp's. But i haven't seen a car with it and i was just curious how it worked and what parts are used, etc. THanks for any info!

Water injection uses a small nozzle like a nitrous nozzle to spray a mist into your intake system. The kit usually consists of a tank, hose, pump and the nozzle. The reason for water injection is to not only cool the intake temps but also to help resist detonation to allow for higher boost levels to be run.

The kits are pretty generic. You can get them from about $200 up to $400. I have a cheap one from Spearco that I got from a friend. I will be putting it in next weekend.

where is the water usually injected? I assume its after the turbo(s), but is it before or after the intercooler, and why? Thanks for all the info guys.

BTW-I couldn't get the aquamist link to work - got an error saying that the bandwith had been exceeded or something like that.

here is a link to the US distributor
but it doesn't give a good desc. check the original site later for more US distributors.

it seems most people tend to stick the nozzle in the pipe before after the IC and before the TB.

Not really accurate, any engine running in any reasonable humidity ingests quite a bit of water anyway. Also one of the byproducts of combustion produces water. It is if you use washer fluid with methanol that you can get in trouble.

I was reading somewhere, dont remember where, they had a set up similar to that, but sprayed mist directly on the IC/ RADIATOR to cool temps. I think it was in an artical about rally cars. What do you think?

If you spray directly ON the intercooler you would only get marginal intake temp reductions. Spraying into the intake will give you both greater intake temp reduction and more resistance to detonation. The drawbacks are that the injection system is a bit more complicated and you need a higher pressure pump than you would just to spray on the intercooler.
