Question What is this?? (The picture says it all...)

Anyone know? I don't think it's an exhaust lol (that's all I could come up w/), esp. seeing that the RE GT car has the exhaust coming out in front of the rear tire...

And on that note, how/why is the exhaust on the LEFT side of the car?? Is that simply cuz it's RHD, so everything's flipped/opposite our US spec cars?

It's a fuel set up. I'm not a expert but from what i understand is one hole is for filling up the fuel cell and the other hole is a outlet for displaced air. I guess it makes filling up fuel faster.

Yeah, I think it's for those super-quick high pressure fuel fill up systems they have at the race track.

Not sure why the exhaust is on the left side. Everything in the engine bay is basically the same - the exhaust is on the same side of the engine as the US. Must have been for some packaging reason.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't even think about fuel...

So hold up, the entire engine bay is the same on a RHD? I'm just assuming, but I thought that the whole thing would be reversed? Manifold faces the opposite side, ABS on the other side, steering rack on the other side, etc etc? I guess that's a no, huh?

I take it w/ that exhaust, they're running basically a long downpipe, right? No emissions equipment whatsoever, right? I know I've seen some Stangs w/ exhausts coming out the side like that...so I assume you CAN have such a setup and still be street-legal?

The only thing that is different is the ABS and the steering column/cruise control.
This is why some of the DP's (HKS i think) have the wierd shaped top.

Manifold and everything faces the same direction. The location of the steering column and such are on the opposite sides. As far as the engine itself, it's the same as what we have here in the states (aside from it being a 3-rotor).

just because its rhd doesnt mean they have to move the whole engine around, just the steering wheel and the associated stuff.

the rear thing is indeed for refueling.

as shown here this isn't your average N/A 3rotor-

I would also say another reason for the exhaust being on the left side may be to prevent any exhaust gasses from being blown into the driver's face. That stuff is rancid with this type of motor/gas/exhast.

It's a dry break fueling system, and the exhaust is likely on the driver's (in the U.S.) side of the car to get by noise limitations at specific tracks, which is an old trick. Noise measurement is typically done from the stands, and they are typically on the passenger's (again, in the U.S.) side of the car. I don't know if that holds in Japan, but that's my guess.

I think Jim got it right. As we all know, rotaries are VERY loud, and any cheating bastard tricks you can do to lower the sound level at a track are gonna be done. They might also have a large muffler where the passenger seat would be.
