What is the main cat dimensions?
I'm considering making my own "resonated MP" with a muffler that is:
3" Inlet / Outlet
6" Diameter Body
19" Overall Length

would the 6" diameter be a problem with scraping or rubbing?

No, it doesn't. You can mix and match mild and stainless steel with no problems. You need to use stainless filler rod or wire though. I have done lots of exhaust work that mixed/matched both types.
Most non-cast turbo manifolds are made this way. The flanges are mild steel and the tubing is stainless. Stainless is not a good choice for flanges because it has a high coefficient of expansion and tends to warp and/or shear off bolts if you're not careful.

I never said it couldn't be done.

Most anything that is mild steel these days has an "aluminized" coating on it to deter rust. It's not as effective as stainless steel, but it does work. I'm not trying to bust your *****, HDP.
It's just a common "myth" that stainless cannot be welded to mild steel and what you stated above sounded like you were saying that.
If you do choose uncoated mild steel parts, then they need to be painted afterwards with high temp paint. I've used flat black bbq paint in the past and it works great. Durable and stealthy.
Batman: I'll be working under my car tonight, so I'll get some measurements for you.
Peace!

The one problem I wonder about is how it is going to hang. You have a half inch variance to the center of the pipe (accepting HDP's measurements). If bolted up to the adjacent piping (unmodified), you may have this thing riding against the floor of the car. I realize there is a shield, but if all are sandwiched up against the floor, this could get a bit warm. Thus, you will in all likelihood need to modify the adjacent piping or devise some type of spacer to keep it down from the floor.
Just use the 12" oval Borla XR-1 muffler with 3" inlet/outlet. Looks like a cat to those who don't know any better, doesn't hang down below the floor pan, and doesn't contact anything when installed.
or just buy an SR resonated midpipe....very nice piece, great sound and streamlined design
btw, alain, how are you "getting away" with a mp in hyper smog sensitive CA?
I still have my MI tag on after 5 years, lol....never been tested

And as far as SR goes, I have heard nothing but bad stuff over the years. Better to weld a magnaflow in your midpipe rather than support that dude.

Ted, who Rich knows just got his FD with the same Edelbrock Tru-Flo that BATMAN has and will post sound clips of just how gosh darn great the muffler sounds.
Smog is tested every 2 years.
But some cars after a decade are on the every year test list.
