Arrow what to look for on a 180+ MPH car?

Looking at sick fast 93 RX-7. Large port and large turbo. Car has done 180+MPH. What kind of stuff can one break or mess up doing high end runs on the 3rd gen?

No different from any other car. Why do you NEED to go 180 mph?

Without proper chassis setup for aerodynamics, definitely the complete car and quite possibly your life.

All he's asking is what can someone who he is buying the car from screw up by doing runs that fast...he's not saying he's gonna take it that fast.

It's a hell of a lot of stress on the motor and cooling system but other than that, I don't see what harm it could do to the car. If the car was regularly going that fast, I'm sure it would wear driveline and suspension parts down faster but.....

thanks for all the cute replies but this car is built and has a rollcage. the owner has been to school for speed and this is done under police supervision. I dont plan on going this fast, just wanted to know what to look out for on the car that could be broken or messed up.

did not see your reply apneablue and ryanberg...referring to the idiots above you

There is no reason to think anything is wrong with it other than the usuals. Does it overheat? Burn coolant? Leak oil? Blow smoke? Hard to start up? How is the compression? Those are all things you'd look for on any RX-7, so just get those types of things checked out and I think that's the best you can do to make sure you get a good deal.

Id just check the mechanics. Engine and driveline. Hell it's probably better off than a FD that sits all the damn time..

Doesn't freakin' matter who's supervision it is done under.

Car and Driver had a Mercedes they wanted to break 200mph with. They were at a test track, 7 mile oval IIRC. They have IR sensors monitoring tire temps mounted on the car. They had Michelin tire engineers there making sure the car was set up correctly, they came in after a 190mph run and found a huge chunk of tread missing. This leads me to believe that street cars CAN go that fast, but saying it is completely SAFE is like saying BASE jumping is safe. Sure most people make it but the odds aren't really that hot.

I did 177mph once. I nearly pissed my pants when I started thinking about what could have gone wrong.
The front end of the car felt soooo light and I dear not imagine what would have happened if one of the tires blew..
Won't do that again....

Think they would even try to catch you? If you have enough room to hit 180+ you must be on a VERY long and straight stretch of highway. Therefor if you fly by a cop going that fast, by the time he even gets on the road you are already a 2 miles ahead of him.. by the time he hits his lights and gets to 60mph you are 6 miles away. If i was a cop i would just let him go... lol.. no way to catch him.

LOL you guys are funny.
When I was in Germany, my friend's uncle was hitting 200mph in his 911 on the autobaun practically everyday. Everytime we went somewhere, he would tell us "I'll meet you there." He hits 150-160 in his Boxster with the top down, and his girlfriend loves it. Those whacky germans The BMW we rented went a max of 150, so it was hard keeping up with him

And us americans? "Oh, you are waay too crazy to be hitting speeds that high"

Of course, it IS legal going that fast over there, but that is just a minor detail

Bottom line, if your car is capable of it, if your car is prepared for it (downforce, good tires, no loose body panels, mechnically in good shape), if you find stretches of highway long enough for it, and most importantly - if you are a good enough driver to not to twitch at those speeds and kill yourself, then I say why not. If a stupid american systemized cop catches you, we are not liable

We are not ricers. We actually GO fast, remember?

Most of us here with 3rd gens at some point take them up to 140 - 160 for BRIEF periods, and it does them no harm. They WERE built for these speeds. My own personal view is:
120 is ho-hum
140 is "oh my"
160 is "sweet JESUS!"
For some reason, those 20 mph increments seem MORE than.....20 mph increments!
If someone has built a car for 180 mph + runs it will likely be suffering no ill effects of those runs. I think one of the main things to consider is whether that is the ragged edge of the performance envelope, meaning it is getting the living **** thrashed out of it at those speeds, or is the car built for even higher speeds and 180 is just playing?
I personally wouldn't want to take a stock FD to that point. We have all seen the video of the salt flat run where the car flies - literally - and I think you would not survive it if you were tumbling and bouncing off trees and **** like that instead of nice flat salt plains!

I WILL NOT BE DOING 180+ I WILL NOT BE DOING 180+ THAS IS NOT THE TITLE OR MY QUESTIONS SO DONT GET EXICITED WHEN YOU SEE 180+ BUT RATHER READ MY QUESTION. THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE ON THE CAR

Engine and Turbo is under warranty and the work was done by absolute professionals so no problem there. I want to know what are some of the little things that can come loose or break (interanls of transmission, clutch, driveshaft components, differential, suspension bushings,...) since I will probably be driving it everyday.

Thanks bajaman...thats the kind on info i was looking for

!
Kinetic Energy = 1/2*mass*velocity^2

Basically the energy of a moving object varies with the square of the speed. Drag force also goes up with the square of the speed. Both of these factors are what makes that additional 20mph seem so fast.
