what intercooler, induction kits for my fd??

hi guys

i just wondered what induction kits and intercooler would be better to buy, you obviously modified your cars so you have some experience.

my concern is why to pay 190 pounds for hks induction kit if i can get something like that:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/93-95-Mazda-RX...QQcmdZViewItem

or:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-85-97-MX...QQcmdZViewItem

separate pipes

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/92-01-MAZDA-RX...QQcmdZViewItem

i mean it can be that bad this cheaper one(of if it is please tell me why) so why to spend much more for nearly the sam, im a complete noob but id like to find out more about my car.

or intercooler

which one? and why?

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...+kit+mazda+rx7

thank you

Why not order from a reputable company? Something like:

As for the intake, it all depends on what you want. If you just want an open intake, some K&N filters on the end of the stock intake pipes will do the trick.

when i did my front mount i went with an ebay core and generic pipe kit. seems fine, although it was a little more work cause i also had to learn to weld aluminum, and i had to plan things out a little more, but in the end i saved some money and learned a new trade. which was all worth it to me.

it's hard to say what those kits you listed will involve. You will probably need to move your radiator and air conditioner condenser, it may or may not work with the air conditioner pump and battery in the stock location. might need to cut the bumper reinforcement and/or the bumper too. most all front mounts require some sort of modifications.

(i cut a cross member piece out for mine so i could leave the a/c stuff and radiator in their stock location. also allowed me to use shorter piping with very few bends.)

intercoolers from well known companies have instructions on how to do things and usually include everything u need to get the job done.

If you're mechanically inclined and don't mind some obstacles then one of those intercoolers should work fine, or you can get just the core + end tanks and then figure out what piping you want. Take alot of measurements remove the bumper and plan things out carefully if you plan on doing it yourself.

Sickboy,

Have you joined any of the FD forums in Europe yet? I'd suggest www.mazdarotaryclub.com and/or www.fduk.org/forum/ (both have other members in the UK who'd be happy to meet up with, and help out locally).

One thing I have learned is that these car's are NOT the ones you want to cut corners on (I drive to Portsmouth for tuning and involved installs) and ebay tends to be shunned by this community. The stock intake works fine and will likely get you much colder air than any cheap ebay induction system.

main reason....

because you're looking at ebay parts.

most of them will not fit without some modification and any gains are negligible as they are more than likely not designed for the FD...

"85-97 mazda mx3 mx5 mx6 rx7 L4" immediately wails a siren in my head when you see different car models listed for one part....

Dudemaaanownsanrx7 thats what i wanted to know, if it doesn't make a difference why pay more? i can do it myself, and if something goes wrong there is rotary specialist round the corner so...

i have joined mazdarotaryclub, but still waiting for a permission to write posts

why this cheap induction kits work bad? is that about the material they been made of? can thay do something bad to my engine? i dont want to be cutting corners, if i have to buy 250 pounds worth induction kit i will, but id like to know why i am buying it..

Efficiency and lag. Those are two big reason. All intercoolers are not the same. For instance, the more bends your piping has, the more lag it will cause in your boost response. The longer the piping, same result. So if you had long piping with a lot of bends, you begin to have very unresponsive turbos. Also, the intake design has a huge influence into how well the overall flow will be. Too restrictive and you'll end up doing more harm than good.

Efficiency has to do with how well the core is able to cool the charge. If they use a cheap core, then you'll end up with:

1. A core that's not efficient and not able to cool your intake temps as much as they should be.
2. A core that's extremely heavy and adding unneeded weight to an already light performance car.

Lastly welds. If it's a shooty build, you'll have crappy welds which could leak causing you further performance issues. I doubt any of those cheap eBay shops who sell the noname intercoolers pressure test any of them.

So, is an eBay intercooler where someone just slaps some crappy end tanks onto a core and throws in some crappy piping may or may not perform as well as one of the "expensive" ones made from a reputable company. In most cases, I seriously doubt it will. There is a lot of R&D that goes into making an effective setup. It's more than just playing Legos with cores, end tanks and piping.

thank you im learning more now.. i didn't know that but it makes sense..

what intercooler would you recomend? i have a friend, he totally modified his fd(580bhp, 0 -60 3,2 secs) and he told me to install the biggest intercooler i can find. which one would be the best to fit my car? (1993 efini twin turbo) whats the biggest i can fit there? (i mean dimensions and all that)

and what about intakes? any recomended ones? im gonna fit standard ones just for now but in the furture want to go for something decent

i found something like that and it looks like the best intake ever (but i dont know)

Intercooler type depends on what you plan to do with your car. They all have their benefits and drawbacks. The trick is deciding what you car is used for to determine which one best fits your use.

As far as intakes, that one is less "scientific". It depends a lot on what you decide for an intercooler, and then what you want: open air intake or sealed box intake. I would first decide on the intercooler, then you can see what intake will work with your intercooler and/or it's piping.

What I mean is, do you or will you:

1. Drag race it
2. AutoX (I don't know if that sport is popular overseas)
3. Drive on road courses (i.e. race tracks something like Knockhill)
4. Just drive it on public streets

For instance, and intercooler which would be good for drag racing would not be particularly good for driving on road courses. This is why matching the product with the application needs to be taken with some thought.

Then a FMIC would probably be just fine. However, keep in mind that with a FMIC, there are some sacrifices. For starters, the FMIC sits in the very front so it's the first thing to get air. That causes some issues with getting fresh air to the radiator and air to the A/C condenser. Those two issues will cause a slightly less efficient A/C system and potentially slightly higher coolant temps.

For an FMIC, I would look at the Blitz like the one I linked above.
