Maybe the previous owner ran it without the airbox. . . . . just sucking air into the accordian pipes for less restriction. . . ?? Weird things happen all the time. .
And totally off topic, dhahlen, the chick in your avitar is totally hypnotizing me. . . . very hot wife/friend/fbuddy

The majority of FD owners have no clue what their turbos look like, most likely b/c they have never seen a set off of the car.
At the shop I used to show customers old stock turbos we had laying around all the time. It's to be expected, really. How many people on this forum know anything about motor internals? Probably even less. Hell, when I bought this car back in 1998 I had no idea where the damn spark plugs were, let alone how to clearance side seals or properly set in an inner coolant seal

They do FOD walk-downs on carrier decks/runways looking for anything that can get sucked into the perfectly-balanced turbine blades.
I think he was following a certain green eclipse when it's flooring busted loose.

if that's the compressor side of the turbo, you should just rip apart the engine for the hell of it, because whatever did that to the turbo prolly fooked your engine's internals. how many blades have parts missing? something pretty big hit that wheel, and all those parts got tossed through the intercooler and into the engine...you'd be EXTREMELY LUCKY if you avoided internal motor damage. i personally think that's a good enough reson for a rebuild, port job, new seals, 99 spec/BNR stage 3 twins (sequential, of course), etc., etc., but that's just me...

there was also a ton of sand in his intercooler... and oil in the pipes too... compression check will be necessary, i dont want to break the bad news to him if he has to rebuild... bullshit, **** yeah i do.. it all comes with owning an FD, lol
