go with the maval rack
Did you weld up the "quill?" If you did not, the steering will be "springy" and lack direct feedback under heavy loading. That sounds like what you are describing. I had a similar problem once with a too-small-diameter (not stiff enough in torsion) steering column on my racecar.

OK, I just found both ends. One end (male) sections off the engine harness behind the alt. The female end splits off the alt harness about even (up and down) with the front spark plugs. Both connectors are black with single black wire. Hopefully this helps and makes sense.
