here's how to know. go outside, light about $4000 worth of cash on fire. It sounds just as painful as that.

If you take 3 keys on a key ring and then gingle them slowly...the tingling sound you will here is next to detonation. It`s a very light pinging sound...best example is to drive a piston engine car up a hill...shift from 1 to 2 gear then when resistnce is applied go into 5 gear and you will hear what detonation is like. sounds like bells

Very good description of the pinging

While listening closely, open your wallet and remove a high limit credit card. That is the sound of detonation.

I know when the motor blows you feel this hard knock almost like bottoming out on a speed bump really hard, then no power.

Most of the time, detonation is not audible inside the cockpit. If you hear a noise, it will most likely be the damage from the detonation that you are hearing, not necessarily the detonation itself.

UNless you have a quiet exhaust or are in an enclosed area like a dyno room, you won't be able to hear it, just feel it as a hesitation/power drop. By the time you realize this and let off (1-2 seconds) it may be too late. You have to tune for the *possibility* of detonation with these engines, because even if you can hear it, a single instance is often one too many.

I heard the pinging followed by my car sounding like a hellicopter. all seals on rear rotor and 2 on the front. It's very disheartening.

I always imagined it sounded like the cocking of a pistol in the hands of an individual that got the repair bill....

I think the keys jingling is close... I would describe it as a spoon banging on a pan, but not really hard... just like tink-tink-tink in rapid succession.

By the time you hear it and lift off, it is almost always too late.

since we are on the topic I won't search. Detonation sounds like keys jingling..

has white smoke belowing

and can never idle smoothly...

do i have it all?

besides the me axing down my money tree...

Edit, and only happens in boost, well not only but most of the time

when there is too much air and not enough fuel...

From inside the cockpit our drivers told us that detonation was more of a feel in the upper rpm range. The engine would stop pulling before redline. Listening from the pitwall however...the engine sounded like a playing card being taped to a bike and hitting the spokes of the rim. A real fast fluttering noise.

Advance the hell out of the timing on a N/A motor drive it...you`ll see what I`m talking about the keys Gingling. However, don`t try this on a force induction car...you`ll be sorry.

Andre

If you need an OEM compression tester I have 2 left for sale..

While I haven't experienced it first hand, I've heard it described as "your engine making popcorn."
