What causes a main fuse to blow?

hey every1,
So i blew the 120A main fuse while auto-x'ing at the RRev....Anytime i went around a corner, the car seemed to hesistate a little, and my warning lights would intermittently all come on, gauge needles would fly all over the place, and when i got done with the run the car wouldn't idle and then it died.....checked the engine bay and the main fuse was shot. Put in a 100A fuse and tried to blow it again, but to no avail I'm wondering what exactly can cause a main fuse to blow....wouldn't it have to be something major for it to blow the main and not an auxillary fuse or am i going to have to search the entire harness for a miscellanious grounded out wire?

-Zach

Accidently hooking reversing the Negative & possitive battery cables would blow your main fuse...

Well its weird because i've never had any electrical gremlins in the 2 years ive owned the car, and i drive her pretty hard. Only that one time on the auto-x did it pop the fuse, and i couldnt get it to reproduce the effects.

I was wondering the same damn thing when you were pushing the car off the track and Bill said it was the main fuse. "How the f*ck do you blow that fuse without shorting all the coils at the same time?"

i hate that main fuse, ive blown it once with my rachet on the alternator. do you think it could be caused by some wires grounding eachother out?

You mean the replacement did NOT blow, and it works fine now?

Fuses can wear out too. Guess, nothing likes vibration and heat... well, some people do, but that's a lounge thread.

True, the constant flexing of heat and cold and moisture and all that jazz could've blow it on a day like that. I'm guessing it was pretty old.

Correct InsaneGideon, i put in a lower amperage replacement fuse, drove the **** out of it many times and couldn't force it to blow. Drove it home and did many multiple 140mph runs and the car ran great. The fuse did look quite worn to me as well, so hopefully that's all it was *knock on wood*

Yeah grouding out any place were + voltage is at has always seem to blow mine. But if you havnt changed it for a while, age could be a factor. Running with 100amp shouldnt be an issues since you are below the rating but new ones are like 3 bucks i think and my mazda dealership had it in stock. Could be worth it

yeah since i was at the Revolution NAPA only had one 120 and one 100, so we were gonna see if it would blow the 100 first so i could put in the 120, stop racing, and make it home. But since nobody is freaking out on here and this is the first time its happened in 2+ years (the previous owner never mentioned elect. gremlins either) im just gonna keep on drivin her

Good luck.

As for running a lower rated fuse, it *may* be fine. But consider me freaked out. I'd definitely change to the properly specified value though. You don't want to be on the highway and turn on the "magic comination" of accessories and blow the fuse, thus killing the car.

Try turning on every electrical device you can think of. Headlights/brights, brakelights, stereo, winshieldwipers, AC fan on high, emergency flashers, blip the power windows, fan-mod/fans on high, etc.
