weird turbo noise ?

Okay, ive just imported myslef a nice 33000 mile RX7 from Japan, and she is beautiful and runs sweet.

For the first time after importing it, i gave it some stick and its great, but at 5000rpm theres a real weird high pitched screaming noise, kinda like wind whistling round a building (if you know what i mean). In fact i though my mate was screaming at me the first time it happened - its that loud.

Now im thinking second turbo, but i have never heard a turbo make this kind of noise, and it boosts fine with no smoke out the back. Anything else it could be ? The RE-Amemiya filter makes weird noise anyway so im wondering if its the inlet pipe into the turbo......

This ever happened to anyone else ?

Chris

I've had that same sound on my 93 for a while now. Originally I thought the secondary turbo was going bad, but a mechanic has since told me that it is just one of the secondary specific hoses that is split or loose. Another guy on here complained about the same problem and found that it was one of the solenoids under the UIM that had gone bad. I haven't had time to check mine though to see if it is the same problem.

This is my 4th 3rd gen, but never had this problem before !

Found that post where the guy said it was his turbo control solenoid that was at fault, but i dont understand why it would make a screaming noise Ive PM'd him !

Im going to examine as much of the 2nd turbo plumbing as possible without removing the UIM......

BTW the FD was $6200 US in Japan.

I dont want to make you cry..but I just had this happen on my front turbo...do check all the things that ppl have mentioned first..afterall that is cheaper then new turbos...but from what I know this is very common for the second turbo because it's always over spinning...ofcourse you can pull off the connections to the 2nd turbo and feel for shaft play..anything in the neighborhood or 1/8 inch too frecken much and what you are hearing in metal being grinded away. Mine front turbo is not leaking "hardly" any oil at all and only will puff slightly during shift changed. Also look for little metal shavings if you decide to look in there.

oh yeah we call it the "Death Whine"
