weird tranny issue...
it's been a few months since i've driven it but this is the first time this has started happening.
the tranny is feeling pretty notchy. when i'm driving, it will upshift (but notchier then i can remember). now, when i try to downshift, the tranny won't shift in to 1st or 2nd unless i'm at about a 4mph roll or stopped. i can be in 3rd at 20mph, and it will not downshift. it will go into any gear but 1st or 2nd unless i'm almost stopped. after i'm stopped or rolling slowly, it slips right into 1st or 2nd.
oh and i almost forgot, as i was in reverse letting off the clutch to get out of my garage, it made something like a sharp loud grinding noise (not sure if it was a grind but a metal on metal on metal noise) for a split second and shook the car a little bit. no idea if that has anything to do with this.
im clueless

I had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the pilot bearing. The clutch disk was fully disengaging but the transmission input shaft was still rotating to some degree with the motor because the worn bearing was creating a lot of friction and occasionally an awful metallic noise.

alright, thanks guys.
oh and btw, it doesn't make any grinding noises at all. it just made that grind/metal on metal noise that one time. it just takes extra effort to shift or it won't shift into 1st or 2nd like i said before.
but you guys suggest i get it towed to a shop?

If it doesn't make grinding noises, it's more likely to be the pilot bearing as Chris suggested. However, input shafts are $250/ea, and require a tranny rebuild to replace. The sound you hear would be the pilot bearing damaging the eccentric shaft bore and input shaft journal. I would drop the tranny before driving it any more, to avoid further damage to them.
