Weird issues with Cooling Fans
Hey gents.
Here's the deal. When i shut the car off the fans kick on about 15 seconds after the car is turned off. They continue to run untill the battery is just about dead. (7.5 volts left on battery per the Greddy TurboTimer). I thought it could be a bad relay, however the fans operate fine when the car is running. It seems they only kick on when the car is shut off....... Thermo sensor bad maybe? If you think you may know the issue please chime on in.

If your fans turn on after the car is shut off, someone has done the fan mod. In stock form, the fans do not come on after the car is shut off. Do a search on fan mod to see what is done, try disabling it, that should stop the fan from comming on after shut off, than figure out how to change the fan on duration.

Just reading about it today in the FSM. A shorted thermosensor (the one behind the filler neck) will cause the fans to remain on. The sensor or the wiring could be the problem. The other water thermosensor in the front housing near the plugs that only serves the <worthless> gauge.

Yep, with the fan recall the factory did (added some harness and black box) that if the engine temperature reaches a certian temp the fans will come on car not running key off till it drops below that temp. This was part of the fix for the excessive under hood temps that was contributing to the rapid deterioration of the fuel/coolant hoses. So I'd be looking at replacing the thermos switch. Jack

My neighbor's FD had a similar problem - we swapped in a new set of fan relays and he was good to go.
The fan control system can't keep the fans running until the battery dies. The fan recall control module is a VERY simple circuit. If the fan thermoswitch is tripped for more than 2 minutes while the car is running, the circuit will run the fans at low for 10 minutes. That's it. It doesn't look to see if the car actually cooled off or anything - it's a simple timer circuit.
It's either going to be bad relays or a short in the wiring harness somewhere.

I had the same problem, the previous owner swapped out for new relays, but after I purcahsed the car, the fans either kicked on or never worked. I discovered the problem after my car overheated sitting at idle and coolant was steaming from the overflow behind the passenger headlight.
After which I then fooled around with the sub-harness that plugs to the relay. I put the key in the ignition, fiddle with the harness and the fans kicked on - full blast....fiddle again, fans kicked off. I pulled off the plastic cover to expose the wires and most of the wires were melted togther. I bought another sub-harness from a member on the board, but I re-did my old harness too.
Good luck!

Update: I havent had to much time to mess with issue ( i got out of the hospital on sunday after 1 week) but seeing how i am a didicated 7 owner i had to figure out the problem, bandaged and all. Anyhow i waited for the fans to kick on after i turned off the car then i jiggled the wiring hardness that leads to the relays and waaaallaaa.....Fans kicked off... I then pulled the relay that i heard/felt clicking on and off and found it was slightly unplugged from the harness. I plugged everything back in and the fans no longer kick on when the car turns off.. in short, i think there was just a faulty connection causing my headache.
