Weird Idle Problem

Ok, I noticed this about a day ago. When cutting my car on the idle shoots up to about 2500 and after about 45 seconds it drops down to about 1000/1200. Well Lately when I have been driving it, the car makes this really really weird noise that sounds like it's coming from underneath the car somewhere, the idle goes from 1200 down to 600 and then back up and keeps doing it. But, if I cut the car lights on, it stops. I find this very weird and have no idea what it might be. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Well let's approach this from an academic standpoint.

What do you THINK it could be?

The starting 2500 thing is probably caused by your automatic warming system there is a trick to stop that but I dont remember what it is - something with the pedals but I dont remember (since I have removed that system). Do a search.

As far as the idle - when you turn on any electrical equipment in your car the ecu switches to a higher idle level. It is most likely that your idle just needs adjusting (too low in the standard state) - maybe the change in weather has affected it. I had to adjust mine when it turned cold and so did a friend on mine. Of course that may not be the case for stock cars/ecu's which I know little about since mine was only stock for about 2 weeks...

Start the car in first gear. This will bypass the AWS (accelerated warmup system).

As for your hunting idle problem, that is usually a sign that you are getting a bit too much air at idle. This can be caused by a multitude of reasons, the most common being a poorly adjusted idle bleed screw, or a vacuum leak.

However, it is extremely hard to diagnose problems like this when you don't list your relevant modifications. Post your engine related mods and we may be able to give you more accurate advice.

Someone told me that it may be my fuel filter, or i may need to run some fuel injection cleaner through the injectors. Do you think this might solve the problem ?

From what you are describing, it sounds like its an intermittent problem. Are you sure that there isn't something interferring with your fans? Something that may be pushed down into the fan blades when you raise your headlight pods? Perhaps something flexible like a hose or a wire?

I've noteced the same thing happens with my FD also. It seams to do it more when it's cooler out side around fall-spring time. I am wandering what this problem happens to be my self. Thanks JD
