yeah...you need a new clutch. should cost about $800 installed. 142K on the clutch? damn, that thing must be toast by now.

you said:

For example, I just blip the gas and the rpm goes up way more than what I expect.

is it possible the accelerator cable to the throttle body is sticky? just a thought

but, yeah, you probably need a new clutch

Yeah, the rpm increased too rapidly that I felt like I was blipping the gas in neutral.

LOL!

yeah, you dont necessarily need a new flywheel with a new clutch, but while you have the tranny loose, you should at least get your original flywheel resurfaced if youre not going to replace it. that shouldnt cost very much at all.

If I understand your problem correctly, you are driving down the road at around 2K rpm when the engine revvs up on its own to about 3K rpm. Your clutch is not slipping and you feel the car accelerate slightly. It feels as if the throttle is punched quickly, but the power is light, almost like one rotor is powered but not both (torque feel). I bet this is happening as you decelerate more often than when you accelerate.

If this is what your problem is, I had a similar problem with two 1985 GSL-SE cars (one stock and one with a header and no emissions). I never figured out the problem before selling them. I was always told it was a bad Throttle Position Sensor, but then I came across a post where a guy had the exact same problem. He replaced the computer and the TPS to no avail. He finally removed the intake and thoroughly cleaned it with throttle body cleaner. He said after that, there was no problem. It never returned.

I would suggest that what you are feeling is induced by the computer because of a dirty throttle body or bad TPS information input or possibly a poor or bad ground wire connection to the computer.

I don't know if this happens on 3rd generations, but this is what happened with my 1st generation fuel injected 13B. When I would push the clutch in and coast to a stop light, it was as if I was blipping the throttle and revving up the engine from idle to about 3000rpm and back down. If I did not push the clutch in, the car would take off and start to accelerate even while I was pressing the brake pedal. It got more interesting. I sometimes could punch the throttle, and it would hang a second and everything returned to normal. Other times, I could put the car in Neutral and leave the clutch out and it would just hang at 3500rpm. You could tell by the sound of the engine that it was not a normal 3500rpm, but it sounded like it was running on minimal torque. I put the clutch in and put it back in first gear and it would start to rev up and down again from idle to about 3K

Good Luck
Tim

PS. if this is your problem, your clutch is fine, but with that many miles on it, I would change it soon anyway.

Hey Tim, I think you're right. But I also believe my clutch is slipping too because sometimes the problem happens when I try to accelerate. It can happen when I'm cruising or accelerating.
