Wow! Man, that is a great shame!
I met Kevin MANY MANY years ago at an old RX-7 Club of Florida get-together down in West Palm. He was helping Brooks Weisblat (another old big lister) try to get some good passes, Brooks was running in the 11's on a nonsequential setup.
I do fondly remember his great ASP products and his flame wars on the Big List back in the day .
Really a great guy who did a lot for the community, terribly sorry to hear he's gone. My best wishes to his family and hope they come through this tough time well.

From the days of the Big List and "Ham Sandwich debates," this is very sad news indeed.
A true pioneer with the FD if ever there was one. I have lots of great "I remember when..." memories from those days. He will be missed.
My sincerest condolences to his family.
Regards,
Crispy

That's really sad! I've had a deer run across the road in the mountains on my motorcycle, but I never thought it could have been fatal. My condolences to his family.

I only met Kevin once. in 2001? I had flown to MN to see his fd that he had breifly considered selling. he picked me up at the airport and we talked cars at his place for 2 hours before my flight home. Very nice guy and super knowledgeable. I learned so much from him in the big list days, and loved the inovations he came up with for our cars. the ASP coolers, headlight kits, and the twin t04 turbo kit he developed on his car were waaay ahead of thier time.
very sad to hear that we've lost him. I'm sure he's in a better place.

Kevin was definitely one of my favorite rotary heroes. I have an M2 Large and medium SMIC and was amazed when I read about where they came from. RIP.
"He was never reckless,” Ronald said. “This was just one of those things. I mean, what are the odds of striking a deer at 11 a.m. on a city street?"

omg... this is unbelievably shocking. I didn't know Kevin personally, but I've known about him since he was the first to break into 10's on 1/4 mile passes with non-seq USDM stock turbos back in the '90s. Like many said, he is well respected and has made a great deal of contribution to the rx-7 community. my deepest condolences to Kevin's family and friends. rest in peace.

i am sitting here in shock!
Kevin was always an inspiration to me. from the moment i read in Turbo magazine that Kevin T Wyum had run some crazy quarter mile number in California and that the bad to the bone black R2 was from Minnesota i started tracking him down.
i finally located him in Minn and talked my way into his garage and was blown away by all the unique engineering. lots of creative stuff at a time when most of the FD products had fallen into a rut.
i built my twin setup off of Kevin's basic concept. Kevins MONSTER intercooler still reigns supreme in my book. his cold air setup remains way ahead of anything i have seen on an FD. i could go on.
and Kevin definitely gave his car a good workout, not only traveling out to California to beat everyone, which he did, but also racing cycles on the street late night. hard core? how about running drag slicks on the street.
a couple of years ago i was in Minn and invited Kevin over for dinner w my friend Frank. Kevin had made a mid life career switch as audacious as his FD.... getting in to medical school. he was working his tail off and really wanted to become a Dr. to that end he had pretty much put his toys aside and clearly pursued his new goal with an equal amount of vigor.
of course i knew he would be back in toyland after a multi year academic thrash. you don't outgrow cars when you have the passion that Kevin had...
Here's to you Kevin... you will be missed but remembered.
