NC Water temp

Just like to say hello, just picked up a 93 BB base fd 61000 miles on it. The reliability mods have been done, koyo Radiator, down pipe, ast , control hoses , boost gauge, water temp gauge, etc. I also changed the fuel filter, oil trans fluid. The temp gauge stays a steady 180 degrees driving around, but when I let it sit it goes up to around 220, turbo timer running.... is this ok or too hot?? I know Im a noob but Ive been lurking and searching around the site and others while I was waiting for the right car to come along. Thanks in advance

That is typical with any car. Your car cools by having moving air pass over the radiator as coolant runs through it. When your car is stationary, there is no moving air across the radiator, therefor the coolant temps begin to heat up (and eventually the cooling fans kick on).

The FC thermoswitch is another worthwhile reliability mod to consider. It simply turns the fans on sooner. Not really simple, but not all that hard or expensive either.

Probably be some difference of opinon on what "safe parameters" are, but IMO somewhere between 83 or 84 C. (183 F.) when the T-stat opens to 110 or 112 C. (233 F.) Personally I don't like to see anything hotter than about 96 C.
Are you waiting for an owner's manual or did you mean the Factory Service Manual? If you meant the latter, check the stickys at the top of this section.

Here's a good thread about the cooling system:

Basically, if you are seeing 240F or over, start worrying.

Thanks, I will get some pics up and my profile fixed, I got a little more polishing and waxing to do. Ive spent all my time so far changing all the fluids and the fuel filter. Ive got to do something about the fuel to compensate for the intake and hi flow cat and exhaust, from what Ive seen here I dont want any boost spikes. Thanks to all replied!

If you don't have spiking, I wouldn't worry. Keep an eye on it as outside temps start to cool, but your mods are pretty mild. IF you have spiking, get a boost controller, either manual or electric. You shouldn't tune (add fuel) to spike.

That's a fairly hefty spike. I would suggest going with an electronic boost controller.

I guess its the intake and exhaust causing the spike??? I doubt I will really mod the car much more I want to preserve it in its current form. If I do someday will I still need the boost controller if I have a pfc, etc.. I want to do it in the proper order .

You need the boost controller now. Spike to 14 psi on a cold winter evening and you will need a new engine. I would stay out of boost until you get one.

Yep, listen to moconnor and Mahjik. get a boost controller. I will put in my vote for a manual boost controller if you don't want anything fancy and don't want electronics mounted inside the cabin.
