very weird coolant problem

Hi guys,

my FD had been down for some time because of a weird coolant problem. Here is the symptom, every time I drive the car, I can hear a water running sound. After I shut off the car, the water will overflow from the overflow tank.

The sound is comming off the passenger glovebox side, if i sit in the car, and rev the engine, I will hear the sound. But if I go over to the engine bay and rev the engine, I CAN'T hear the sound.

I have tightend all the hoses I can reach, and there was no bubble in the coolant when I start the car.

Could it be the heater core? I don't see any leak on where the heater hose enter the firewall. If there was a leak in the heater core, where will the water go? also how do you get to the heater core in FD? do you have to remove the dash? I have a 93 base model.

Thanks alot,

Randy

Air in the coolant line makes this sound. You need to find out why you have air in your system.

Check that the coolant cap (on the top front of the engine--don't know what its called) and the AST cap are not broken. If these caps are not holding the pressure the coolant will **** out of the overflow tank, an you wil get air in your collant lines.

That would be the first thing to check, but I eliminated the AST,and have a new cap on the engine....
It just seams that there is too much pressure...

Here we go again. Take the rad cap off (at the filler neck), run the engine till warm and look for continuous fine air bubbles, if it there, it's rebuild time (unless you want to try the block weld stuff). Other wise look for leaks by pressurizing the coolant system with a pump.

Yeh,I was affraid thats what it is......
Don't see any bubbles, but starts building pressure just after you start it,well, time to park it in garage and go for rebuild I guess

Trexthe3rd,that's a nice advice, but If I leave the cap of and run the car,it'll just pour out, plus I overheated it yesterday.........when I was trying to make it home.

Some will pour out when you try it....wait till the car is cool...like in the morning, opent the cap and top off the coolant...Start the car and then with a rag cup around the filterneck (being careful not to get the rag caught in the o2 pump pully) and check for it that way...whatever pours over just wash it off when you are done....
