Venting Stock BOV

I've been looking through the forums and I've come across a few members that vent their stock bov's. Is there any real benefit from doing so, and how would you go about doing this?

The only benefit is noise. There is no performance gain. You do this by taking off the line which runs from the BOV into the stock airbox. Then, put a cap/plug on the open hole into the airbox.

I've heard that you end up getting oil everywhere under the hood when doing so ?

If you are tracking the car, yes.

it's the ricer thing to do really, all you gain is the sound of venting the boost pressure and the possibility of any turbo/engine oil blowby getting all over the place.

I've seen a lot of people do this... I don't think it's "ricy", it's not like they spent any money or made the car look like crap. I've also never noticed any oil in the bay from doing it...

If you are tracking the car, oil can and will creep up the stock oil filler neck from hard, sustained cornering. Once it gets there, there are only 3 places for it to go:

1. Back down
2. Into the UIM (for the cars that still have the PCV in place)
3. Into the primary turbo inlet elbow

It's #3 which leads to oil shooting out the BOV as it goes back into the intake track and gets either dumped into the IC or out through the BOV (generally, both).

Try it out, it won't hurt anything per se.

Watch the hood liner (blanket)

Actually, I like the sound of it vented.

However, be careful where it is pointed, ours did a number on the hood underblanket after a month or so. Not oil, just blew the insulation apart.

I think K&N makes small air filters that are suitable for attaching to the BOVs outlet. I have one attached to a Cartech turbo kits BOV on my `83. Might muffle the Phssssss sound a little but I know I can hear mine dump air fairly well on the `83. It`s one of those filters that you can clean & then re-oil when it gets dirty. Another thought just came to mind. Might measure the BOVs outlet diameter. Go to a motorcycle shop & see what sizes they have for bikes. They just may have one that fits. If you do find one, that should take care of any oil that might spray under the hood if the situation arose. You should have a little louder air dump sound too, rather than having everything get routed back to the big airbox & muffled more, like the factory did. If the air dump still isn`t loud enough for you with the little air filter on, you can always take it off. Might be worth looking into.

Oh ya, I have a K&N on it, doesn't really muffle the sound at all. Ditch the underhood blanket if you haven't already.

Sounds like a greddy RS blow off valve and cool until it eventually wears out...then it chirps weird and leaks boost. So have fun for like 5 months vented....then just buy a BOV and don't be cheap. hahaha

I loved it for the time being.

Why would venting the stock BOV cause it wear out any more quickly then having it vented into the intake? That makes no sense.

To avoid getting oil in the engine bay, you can always buy pre-molded coolant hoses to attach to the BOV and aim it down. That way if oil blows out, it can get re-routed down and out of the car. Although that would be a bad idea on a track without some sort of filter.
