Venting the hood ? The Stock hood !
Anybody do this yet ? I'm going to repaint the hood and was thinking of
venting it so my after market intercooler(stock location) will function better !
Anyone have pic's ? Please post ASAP !

Not sure if you know Jim O'Brien or not, he's been a big list member for awhile now but recently I found out he sold his car. If you've ever seen pics of his car, its white with 2 blue strips. He had his stock hood done with the louvers in the blue strips so the vents were there but not visually standing out. He said it was a pain in the *** for the body shop to get it right, but they did a great job....Just look around for a shop you know good and talk to them about doing it. It'll take some work and money since the underside of the hood has reinforcement bars on it and must be dealt with when cutting the hood.

it's hard to see in the picture but this car has z3 louvers welded into the stock hood. it looks great from the outside but doesn't look so hot when you open the hood. i'm sure the body shop had a hell of a time putting them in though for the reason tim benton stated. i would just go with an aftermarket hood since it seems you'd be going through more trouble than the cost savings are worth. but if you want to make a unique hood that's be admirable too. good luck.

dont get it i almost got one because its only $500 dollars but it sucks
my friend bought it when he painted his car s2000 yellow.
the body shop painted it 3 times and fixing it more times.
ended giving him a headache and the bodyshop,
and he built the car for show. now its in the perfomance shop
and i saw it 3 days ago and it still looks like ****.i mean its not the bodyshop they are good believe me if the cant fix it thats all

I wish I could take credit for having done the work, but the previous owner has that honor. I will, however, take some detailed pictures and post them and get some info on how it was done and how hard it was from him and let you guys know..
I'm curious...and the functional purpose of this vent would be?
Filling the underhood area with a positive pressure cooler air?
Would this then reduce airflow through the radiator and IC?
It's not feeding air into the IC or is plumbed to the intake (or is it)
so I'm not sure from a performance standpoint what benefit this
would be. Or are you guys just after the looks

i agree with you, i ain't sure about the performance of that hood.
to be fully functional, there should be some sort of reverse trap farther on the hood or at leat, you must remove the rubber at the end of the hood.

I see the argument for letting in cooler air but I dunno the pros to this principle are questionable IMO. Firstly the radiator takes airflow through the high pressure nose region and vents to a lower pressure underhood region. Now you are pressurinzing the underhood area with air from the hood vent and the flowpath through the radiator is going to be fighting with airflow from the vent to "fill" the underhood region. A similar argument for the IC. If you look at virtually every other vented hood design all are designed to vent hot air *out* from under the hood as a means of cooling vs allowing cool air into the underhood region using flow through the various cooling devices (IC, radiator) as a motive force to push the hot air out. As an aside these vents were purpose built for ducting air to the front sides (inlets) of intakes and radiators and other things and might be counterproductive to what their intent is, ie yeah you get cool air into the engine bay but at the expense of poorer flow through the radiator (higher coolant temps) and poorer flow through thr IC (higher intake charge temps) Any aerodynamicists...a little help here?

I only want to improve the flow of air going threw the IC !
I have a Pettit air duct and a custom large stock locaton IC.
so when the air goes threw the front of the nose into the duct threw
IC and into the hot engine bay ! I simply want to get that air to
vent out the hood and not stop in the engine bay!

Hotwheel, I did a thread about this a few days ago and mentioned fiberglass vents. Someone else replied about the differing expansion rates of fiberglass and aluminum(what the hood is made of). They said that when the car warmed up it would crack the vents. I was trying to figure out how to do it, but I've come to the conclusion that the amount of time/work/money it would take to do it, I'm better off hopping onto the mazdaspeed replica hood group buy.

I would think the Viper-like hood could be used to feed the intercooler.
