My buddy Jack Lambert has a pair of really neat carbon fiber exit vents on the upper part of his stock hood. The raw carbon fiber looks very cool against the MBM paint. He's a track guy and is pretty cutting edge, so I assume they are functional(been running water injection for the past 4 years ect). I think he said they were made for porsches by some euro company. I'll try to find out more. If anybody has even a slight clue as to what I'm referring to speak up!

I dont think such a small gap when the hood seal is removed would restrict airflow thru the radiator or intercooler. I dought that this would effect all that flow going past the radiator.You would have to be going really fast and have a larger opening to restrict any airflow into the engine compartment.My guess is the air that is forced in cools of the rear of the motor as it gets pushed out of the engine compartment.

I think I know what you are talking about. Jack was my instructor at Lime Rock last year. He does have a NICE FD. I happened to take some pictures of his car at the track. Here it is.

By the way. I sat in Jack's car during the instructor run at Lime Rock and he's clocking an average of 1:02 with me on it!! For the people that does know Lime Rock, that is FAST.

As a matter of fact, the average BMW club racers on the same day averages about 1:06, and the fastest race prep BMW averages about 58sec.

For Wade: In principle the duct would be good for feeding an IC but the geometries for making it work would be difficult. It't would be much easier to route the air trhough the nose through the IC and directly out through the hood. This is what CWR had originally envisioned with their IC design. Same design principle can be seen on an original Daytona Coupe and Ford GT40 radiator ducting.
For Shea: re Jacks car, yes these are great for venting air *out*. In fact, if my rudementary knowledge holds true, given the aerodynamics of the RX-7 front end with the proper placement these vents will actually *pull* hot air out through the ducts. This is precisely the design idea seen on virtually every aftermarket hood for our cars.

I did a search for "hood scoops" on Yahoo and was surprised at the results. Probably some of these manufacturers make vents as well. Good luck.

Check out the vented bonnets on the australian sp rx7's. They have two vents towards the front of the bonnet which are pretty much above the radiator. They also have two vents on the back of the bonnet (similar to cosworth) one above turbos and another directly oppositte to match up. They are all extraction vents. they do not force air into the engine compartment.

check out this link. Bonnets are carbonfibre. I have done something very similar to mine. I did the cutouts on mine and bought the carbon fibre rear vents from the company that made them for mazda. vents were $150 Aus.

The best and easiest thing you can do the the stock IC is put a fan on the back. The prob with the stock IC is when you stock the temps rise very high and fast. Installing a fan on the back to suck air through the core while its sitting would be a great help.

My vote is to not mess up you hood but instead get a good fan to put on the back of the IC.

F-50 hood vent extend FAR into the trunk. I was thinking more along the lines of having a mazdaspeed style hood where the vents go all the way down to the bottom of the stock IC. So that the air goes in, through the IC, and right on out.

If you want to be unique, theres an genuine RE hood on ebay, you can probably count how many there are in the country on one hand..

(02) 9759 4049. Rememeber it is in australia. These guys made all the carbon fibre bits for the SP so you might be able to get the entire bonnet for a cheap price considering the exchange rate at the moment.

Your local parts store, like "O'Rieley" or Autozone will have a fan that will fit. Ask them for the smallest "generic" cooling fan they sell. It should fit the stock intercooler or a front mount with only slight modification to the fan shroud. I will see if I can get any part numbers for a good fitting fan next week. E-mail me if you are still interested. Intercooler sprayers that spray ice water or CO2 gas cool the intercooler the best though. I have used an IC sprating system for about a year...and it has increased HP(dyno proven), and safety quite a bit. I WILL HAVE HIGH QUALITY COOLING KITS FOR SALE IN THE NEXT MONTH OR TWO. They will consist of an intercooler spraying system that uses either ice-cold water or an even colder, moist CO2 gas, AND a rear mounted suction FAN to pull more cold air through, and keep hot air away. E-Mail me if you would be interested in a kit like this. So far, I have only made kits using water. I plan to start testing the CO2 kits next week. I will also provide pics and dyno numbers after the kits are complete and tested.

What would you guys think about the kind of vents on the TRD Supra hood? It's the same thing that's on the F&F. It looks like that would be even easier if we could get good design.

Your Viper vent increases the number of areas for air flow and pressure under the hood and this will reduce the air flow through the radiator and IC. Sorry but it does not look good and its affect is detrimental to your engine.

I have conducted air flow direction tests of removing the sealing strip along the rear edge of the hood. This is also a looser idea. Even at 20-30mph, air from the high pressure at the windshield base flows into the engine compartment. It is even worse at higher speeds. This flow counteracts the flow from the nose.


Both above are bad ideas. You must understand something about fluid
dynamics for expected results unless you only want the appearance value.
