the car does not have a boost controller, so if the boost was high it was because of pressure drop across the turbos due to the high flow exhaust. this was not a case of "turn up the boost for instant gratification". and yes, i did drive it fairly hard a few times on the 1100 mile trip back to north dakota after i bought it. the car felt great.
if the car is already screwed up, would it hurt it more if i drove it to the dealership to get checked? also, how can i know for sure what it is before i spend a whole bunch of money to fix an apex seal.

Mikey, have you learned anything more about the problem. Ever since I read your post I just can't believe that that guy sold you the car with a stock ecu. He may be real nice on the phone and all but I think he f***ed you.
There must be someone in ND that can work on the FD for ya. I fell for ya.

i'm going to make an appointment to bring it to the mazda dealership so they can plug in to the ecu and do a real compression check.

Mikey don't waste your time man

take out the trailing or top spark plug in each rotor housing one at a time. Take out the fuel pump relay. Have a friend mash the clutch and gas and try to start it up

You stand right next to the engine bay and listen. You should hear 3 even pulses (bursts of air) on each housing. It should be obvious if there is a problem you will hear 1 strong pulse and 2 weaker ones. If they all sound even then go to a rotary specialist and ask them to do a compression check.

Any way it really sounds like you blew the motor pretty good the way you desribed it I'm possitive. The owner may be nice but he did **** you over and he must have known that you needed the pfc for the car to run if he knew enough to get a pfc and have it tuned and even knew how to take it out of the car. Call the guy and thank him for being a reject. Then get over it and get a new motor and you'll love the car so much and you'll know you have an awesome engine in there now.

I don't understand the allegations on how the seller fucked him up. Mikey simply wasn't able to pay the asking price and the seller wouldn't lower the price and thus taking out the equipment he could sell separately. Sure, it was irresponsible to do so, but what was he supposed to do (except for insisting on the price and not selling the car)? He did warn him and Mikey probably didn't take the "take it easy" adivce seriously or just wasn't aware on how quickly the boost can build up when you step on it.

I do feel for you Mikey though. Blowing an engine sucks, being it on the first day of ownership more so.

These cars are fragile if misused, some learn the hard way

That's exactly what he should have done. The car wasn't safe to drive without the PFC and it shouldn't have been sold that way. That's my opinion.

That's too bad.

Try to find some local owners to find out where they go. I know you don't exactly live in FD central, but perhaps you can find a better place to go than the Mazda dealer. Otherwise, you may have a lot of troubleshooting to do after the install.

Good luck.

Yes, what Rynberg said. Plus don't even drive it without an ECU upgrade.

the car came with a set of "custom offset" forgline wheels sized 17x10 front and back. they also have yoko advan r-compound tires (275/40-17) in good shape. i know how much he said they cost but i wonder what you guys say they are worth and if anyone wants to buy them. (i have some paper in with my reciepts that came with the car that says $1017.75 but i don't know if that is for one or two).

New Forgelines and A032R tires in that size would total about $3700 ($2700 for wheels, $1000 for tires). Assuming the wheels are in good shape, you should get at least $1500 for the set. Tires would add minimal value unless they are brand new. Figure an asking price of $2000 or so, unless they are in mint condition, then maybe a little more. You might be able to pick up a set of stock FD rims with tires for about $500 or so.
