Melted my driver side fan... twice
Melted my driver side fan... twice
Hey guys I was wondering if anyone else has melted a radiator fan/housing. At first I thought something was hitting the fan and stopping it, causing it to melt the blade and the housing. I installed another set of fans and made sure it could spin freely. It spun fine for about 5 min until it got hot and warped the housing causing the blades to hit the housing and stop.
Help please.

I haven't melted mine but I did tweak the blades with the heat shield that fell down and rubed them. I inquired about the '99+ JDM 5&7 blade setup but haven't received a price check from jt-imports yet. I'm not sure if that's considered aftermarket (or stock) from MazdaComp. I keep forgetting to call them.
I am using the stock fan assembly.
I also have a koyo radiator with the brackets swapped so it sits lower. At first the brackets weren't flipped and everything sat really high so I thought something was stopping the blades. I then flipped the radiator brackets so the radiator sat lower and checked to see if the fans spun freely. They did. Then the driver side fan/housing melted again.

I just noticed my battery tray it slightly resting on the fan housing. I'm thinking that maybe the housing got really hot and the weight of the battery on top of it caused it to warp???
Is the motor supposed to get hot enough for the housing to warp?

Your battery tray should not be resting on your fan housing. I would double/triple check your Koyo install. Make sure that it is sitting as low as possible.
Do you have the stock battery tray installed?
Also, is there any way for you to verify that your car is not overheating? Do you have an aftermarket temp guage or a PFC?
Another ? is are you running the stock intercooler set up or a front mount?

I am using the stock battery tray and intercooler.
I don't have an aftermarket temp gauge but my temps are rising on the stock gauge. That is why I found out the fan was melting.
i guess the prob might be the battery tray sitting on the fan housing. The housing pushes up the battery tray on one corner higher than the other three corners.

The only other thing that I can think of is that your engine is over heating and that is causing your fans to melt. I do not think this is the case though becasue you would have many other problems along with melted fan housings.
I had my driver's side fan grind into the shroud and ruin the motor because the stock battery tray wasn't properly secured and it slid over, pushing down on the motor. The stock tray should be secured in three spots: two along the fender, and one on the cross brace that's under the stock intercooler, airbox, etc. The fourth corner just kinda floats over the fans, which isn't that great of an idea, imo.
I ended up replacing the cross brace because it was rusted, the fan shroud, fan blade, and motor. I also purchased the custom battery tray from turbojeff (? correct me if I'm wrong) so I could install the smaller and lighter 51R battery. No problems since.

If so, I've never heard of such thing in any vehiche except as a result of a fire in the engine bay.

Did you say MELTED radiator fan/housing? As in MELTED from HEAT?

Well I put a couple washers under the battery tray location to raise it now. It no longer touches the fan housing. Hope this works.

And it's that fourth corner that is pushing against the motor as well.

You are either feeding us a line of BS or your Koyo is seriously installed wrong. Your radiator SHOULD NOT be resting on your motor with a SMIC set up.

when i installed my koyo, it also rested on the battery. it needs to be slightly adjusted but should be fine. ithink this happens because the koyo pushes up so much. the intercooler duct was also pressed against the fan shroud.
